What does a transcriptionist do?

A transcriptionist transcribes audio and video files into written content.  This means that you listen to a piece of audio or watch a video, and then type what is said word-for-word.

Transcription is needed by all different types of industries, such as academia, medical, marketing, legal and others.  And the great part of this job is that most companies will hire for home transcription jobs.

Legal transcription requires the knowledge of legal terminology and documentation, as well as the general transcription skill set.  Medical transcription may require a knowledge of medical terminology and expertise.

However, medical transcription may not always require prior experience. You may be able to find some healthcare professionals who will hire beginners for transcription work.

I worked for ten years as a payroll clerk at a medical office.  While I worked there, I also occasionally did medical transcription for the doctor despite not having prior experience.  I had basic knowledge of medical terminology which I picked up from working at the doctor’s office.

What type of skill set does a transcriptionist have?

They need to be able to type quickly, be self-disciplined, have great listening skills, be proficient in grammar and punctuation, have knowledge of time coding, and be capable of using word processing software and the internet.

Although listening to an audio recording and typing what you hear may sound simple, sometimes you may face challenges such as poor audio quality or difficult accents.  For medical transcription, you may not recognize some of the medical terms and might have to research them to get the correct spelling.

You should be able to type at a certain speed (usually at least 65+ wpm), have a reliable internet connection, access to a quiet work environment, and own a good quality headset.  You may also want to invest in a foot pedal, and transcription software(you can use the free version of this).

Is transcription in demand?

The demand for qualified transcriptionists will increase as video and audio files are in exploding popularity all over the internet.  This job is still in demand and will continue to grow.

Because of its growth, transcription can be a great flexible choice for those seeking to work from home.  Transcription jobs from home can even be done with little to no experience.

How much can I earn as an online transcriptionist at home?

A general transcriptionist can currently earn an average median annual income of $45,000.  Legal transcriptionists can earn even more with their average median annual income coming in at around $60,000.

AccuTran Global requires you to pass a qualification test before you begin working as a work from home transcriptionist.

CrowdSurf hires freelance transcriptionists to complete transcription tasks as well as video captions.

Pay is not stated on their website, but you will be paid through Work Market.

Daily Transcription offers online transcriptionist jobs for beginners, and are open to residents of the U.S. or Canada.
Their pay rates start at $.75-$.85 per audio minute.  Their official website notes that top transcriptionists make anywhere from $250-$950 a week.

Dictate Express requires you to pass some qualification tests before applying.
Workers are hired as independent contractors and can choose when they work. They do require a minimum of 45 minutes of work done per day.

GMR Transcription pays once a month via PayPal or direct deposit.

Top monthly earnings at GoTranscript are said to be up to $1,215 per month.
They do require you to pass a short transcription test before they will hire you.
GoTRanscript will pay up to $.60 per audio or video minute.

Payments are made weekly via PayPal or Payoneer.

QuickTate

QuickTate offers general, legal, and medical online transcription jobs for beginners.  As with most of these companies, you will be required to take a typing test before you can start working.
QuickTate also requires you to submit a background check that costs $20 before you can start working.  You would be working as an independent contractor for this online transcription company.
Pay is estimated to be at $.25-.50 per audio minute.
Payments are made weekly via PayPal.

Rev is  a popular company for online transcription jobs for beginners.
They hire freelancers to do transcription work.  They also hire workers to translate subtitles and for video captioning.
Like the majority of these companies, they do require a qualification test to start working.
Their website states that they pay $.30-$1.10 per audio or video minute.
Payments are made weekly via PayPal.

Scribie

Scribie requires you to have a verified PayPal account in order to work with them.
They also require a test in order to be hired, like the majority of these remote transcription companies for beginners.
You get to work whenever you want by logging in and choosing the files you want to transcribe.
Scribie’s official website says that they pay at a rate of $5 to $25 per audio hour, with the opportunity to earn a $5 monthly bonus for every 3 hours of work.
Payments are made once a day and you can transfer your balance to your PayPal account at any time, with no minimum requirements.

Speechpad

Speechpad also requires transcriptionists to take a test prior to working.
They are looking for those who can type at a speed of at least 40 words per minute with 100% accuracy.
Their average rate of pay is $0.25 to $1.00 per audio minute.
Workers are considered independent contractors and are responsible for their taxes.
Payments are made twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays via PayPal.

Tigerfish

In order to start working with Tigerfish, you must submit an example of your work by transcribing a three-part recording, which includes audio from a focus group, an interview, and a presentation.
While you can use the free version of Express Scribe for this test, you are required to purchase Start Stop’s Power Play for Windows Media once you start working for Tigerfish.
Tigerfish does not give any information about compensation and payment delivery on their website.

Transcribe Me also hires workers as independent contractors.
Their website says that general transcribers are paid $15 to $22 per audio hour.  The average monthly earnings are around $250 while the highest earners can make around $2,200.
As soon as your account reaches a balance of $20.00, you can request a payment.
Payments are made weekly on Thursday via PayPal.

This company requires you to take a transcription test and then pays you in accordance with your performance on the exam.
They pay at an average of $.75 per minute of audio.
Payments are made once a month via direct deposit or PayPal.

Transcribers will work on transcribing audio from files such as interviews, conference calls, podcasts, etc.
Transcription Wing pays at an average of $.60 per recorded minute.
There is no available information about when payments are made or what they use for payment delivery on their website, but they have said they provide instruction guides to help beginners in this field.

Upwork

Upwork is a freelance job platform.  It allows freelance workers to apply for individual jobs.
You can search for remote transcription jobs and read through the requirements for each job to find out the experience required, as well as the pay.

They hire workers as independent contractors, so you can work as much or as little as you want or need to.
You can be a resident of the U.S., the U.K., Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, or the countries in the European Union, but must have proficiency in English.
Pay ranges from $0.45 to $1.73 per minute of audio.
