What is TRS Active Care?TRS-ActiveCare provides health coverage to most public education employers in Texas. It funds that coverage through a self-funded health plan (pdf) model. Many are surprised to find that TRS health care works differently than health insurance they can buy on the individual market.
Is TRS Active Care HD a PPO or HMO?The TRS-ActiveCare 1-HD plan is an "Aetna Open Access Choice POS II" plans, which works very much like a PPO. You are free to receive care from any licensed doctor or other health care provider. When you choose providers who belong to Aetna's network, you will pay less out of your pocket for covered services.
Is TRSNetwork: The TRS-Care Medicare Advantage plan is a National Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan. That means that you may see providers both in and out of network for the same cost, as long as the provider accepts Medicare and is willing to bill UnitedHealthcare.
Do teachers get health insurance when they retire in Texas?Texas offers health insurance coverage to both active (TRS-ActiveCare) and retired (TRS-Care) school employees. For active employees, the state contributes $75/month toward premiums, and districts must contribute at least $150 (many contribute more).
