Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use if you get snow. I installed my deck waited 3 months for it to dry fully and shift as new decks should before staining or painting. I purchased the stain read the directions and made my husband read it too. Prior to finishing we re-tightened screws lightly sanded to remove the roughness and any sap that comes out when drying. Checked weather reports and then stained. It went on beautifully and looked so attractive, I was delighted with the results until a year later when anywhere snow was on the deck the stain peeled and flaked off. After one (1!) winter with nobody out there on it, it has peeled off everywhere. I contacted Thompson, and they offered me a refund for the price of the product if I still had the receipt (I don't). The peeling sealant is now a bigger mess than if I had used nothing and just left my deck bare. Date published: 2019-05-02 Rated 1 out of 5 by Rivenjan from Terrible Product Bought the stain and applied as directed to railings, decks and other wood structures. Started peeling a few months later. Now after winter it is over 80% peeled - including the decks that are covered. What a mess and worse stain I’ve ever used Date published: 2020-05-01 Rated 1 out of 5 by Heidi52 from It did a terrible job. I perhaps should’ve checked I should’ve checked the reviews before I bought it. It did not last, not even a year. I’m very disappointed what a waste of my money and my time. I hired somebody to make sure it was done properly as well. Date published: 2021-04-24 Rated 1 out of 5 by DISAPPOINTED DEAN from keep your money, stuff is garbage I bought this item years ago and attempted to use it just as directed. the following year, i had to re apply, as most of flacked away. The initial usage, wood was dry, used in the AM hours, temp approx 20 C, allowed to dry for 48 hrs and the following year, this product flacked off again. Did a full stripng of the deck and tried again...guess what, it flaked off again. PRODUCT IS GARBAGE Date published: 2022-05-02 Rated 1 out of 5 by Justin K 1986 from Not fit for Canadian Climates I just finished stripping Thompson’s off my rear 10’X10’ deck. 80 percent of this product will flake off each spring while the remaining 20 percent will be very difficult to remove. It looks good immediate after the application and then wears really fast. Go buy oil stain instead. I did my front deck with SICO oil based stain and after 3 years it still looks great. Allow the first coat to dry approximately 2 hours.
How long does Thompson WaterSeal last on wood? How long will Water Seal last? If applied correctly, Water Seal will last up to 4 years. This is dependent on conditions such as orientation of the wall and local climate.
Does Thompson water Seal darken wood?Thompson's® WaterSeal® Waterproofing Wood Protector - Clear doesn't change the color of the wood. Transparent deck stain adds a hint of color and shows the most wood grain.
Is Thompson's water Seal stain good?Thompson's WaterSeal has clearly not been a consumer favorite with deck stains or sealers. Mainly as it does not offer any UV protection and it grays in a few months. The Transparent and Semi-Transparent versions are prone to premature peeling and wearing after about 1 year.
