Show Page a Resident Pagging Service Resident Schedules Samy McFarlane, MD, MPH, MBA Dr. McFarlane is at the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine / Endocrinology who completed his IM residency, Chief residency and endocrinology fellowship at SUNY-Downstate/ Kings County Hospital Center and held several leadership positions including Program Director and Chief of Endocrinology. During his tenure as a PD and chief of Endocrinology, the division obtained full accreditation twice without citations and was transformed into a powerhouse of research and academic output where fellows graduated to hold leadership and academic positions at major institutions including the National Institute of Health. He also served as the Director of the IM Clerkship, where he promoted research and other scholarly activities among our students, edited, and co-authored with his Downstate students the popular review book, The First Aid for Medicine Clerkship, McGraw Hill and co. that has become the recommended clerkship reading at major universities. Dr. McFarlane also holds Professorship in Emergency Medicine and Radiology. He was the founding director of the EM clerkship, and he developed and taught an introductory course on bone densitometry for the Radiology residents and fellows. He is a prolific researcher and authored over 300 publications including several books in the areas of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. He uses research and publications as a way to promote the career of his students, residents and fellows. His funded research by the NIH, ADA and NKF as well as other major institutions was cited over 10,000 times. He is the founding editor of several journals and currently is the Editor-In-Chief for the International Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Nationally, Dr. McFarlane is a 2- term elected member of NIH-NIDDK and served twice as a Chair at NIH- NIDDK U01 committee. He also served as a Chairman of the clinical sub-committee of the National Kidney Foundation, Kidney Early Evaluation Program (NKF-KEEP). Dr. McFarlane is the past District President of the American College of Physicians and is the recipient of numerous awards including recognitions from the United States Army, the US Congress and the Gold foundation for Humanism in Medicine. Dr. McFarlane has a broad clinical, academic and leadership experiences as well as credentials including Master in public Health from SUNY-Downstate and Master in Business Administration in Health Care from the George Washington University. He is well- positioned to serve as the Program Director for Internal Medicine Residency Program, and an alumnus with clear understanding of the inner workings of our institutions; he provides leadership and directions to the IM residency program offering the best opportunities to our residents as the next generation of scholarly physicians. Ramirez, MD Dr. Ramirez attended medical school at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec) and attended Residency at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate) 2008-2011. He is currently an academic Hospitalist at SUNY. He has an interest in quality improvement, high value care, physician wellness, curriculum development and resident mentorship. Patrick Geraghty, PhD Patrick Geraghty received a bachelor of science degree in 2000 and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the National University of Ireland in 2004. He undertook post-doctoral training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Dublin, Columbia University, and St. Luke’s Hospital/Mount Sinai. He is faculty at SUNY Downstate within the Pulmonary Division since 2015 as Research Assistant Professor. His research activities focus on pulmonary immunology. He specifically explores the role of phosphatases and pathogen recognition receptors in pulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and pneumonia. He has over 40 peer-reviewed research publications and has research funding from the Alpha-1 Foundation and the Flight Attending’s Medical Research Institution. Boursiquot, MD, M.Phil. Born in Jacmel (Haiti), Dr Boursiquot graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) in Philadelphia, PA and completed his medical residency training in internal medicine with research rotation at the Brooklyn Hospital Center/Icahn School of Medicine (SOM) at Mount Sinai & Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer under Ross L. Levine’s tutelage. He was also a PhD candidate at Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai where he has accumulated several competitive and prestigious awards including the NIH’s Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (F31) and a NIH T32 grant. At SUNY Downstate, Dr Boursiquot is an Associate Program Director of the Residency Training program, oversees the ambulatory medicine didactic curriculum, the quality improvement research, and is a faculty preceptor for our internal medicine residents and SUNY Downstate COM medical students. Harjinder Gill, MD Dr. Harjinder Gill earned her MD degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, W.I. and completed her Internal Medicine residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She then stayed on at SUNY Downstate as an academic hospitalist where she was able to pursue her interest in teaching by working closely with medical residents and students. She serves as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program with a focus on curriculum development and a strong interest in resident mentorship and growth. Sunny Paghdal M.D. Dr. Paghdal attended medical school at Ross University School of Medicine and is a graduate of the SUNY Downstate Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency program (2014-2017). Upon graduation he continued on at SUNY Downstate Medical Center as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Academic Hospitalist. Dr. Paghdal also serves as Director of the Hospitalist medicine journal club and has an active interest in resident education. NYC Health + Hospitals | Kings CountyFranco Falcone, MD Dr Falcone is Italian born and worked in management consulting and banking in Italy and in the US for more than a decade before attending medical School at SUNY Downstate. After completing his IM Residency Program at St Luke's Roosevelt he became a hospitalist. After a stint at Norwalk Hospital, he joined Kings County and the SUNY Downstate faculty as Assistant Professor of Internal medicine. Prabash Koneru, MD Dr. Prabash Koneru is a Hospitalist at Kings County Hospital Center. He earned his MD degree at the University of the West Indies, then completed his residency training at SUNY Downstate. Dr. Koneru serves as faculty and an Associate Program Director for SUNY Downstate Internal Medicine Residency Program. Melissa Lee, MD, FACP Dr. Lee attended Yale University School of Medicine then continued her residency at Harvard for a combined program in Medicine & Pediatrics and completed a fellowship in Clinical Quality. Her career and research focus is on Medical Education, Ambulatory Care Quality Improvement, Patient Centered Care, Community Outreach/Patient Education and Population Health. Regina Miller, MD Dr. Miller is board certified in Internal Medicine. She completed her medical school education and residency training at SUNY Downstate. As an academic Hospitalist and alumna, her focus is providing high-value care while serving as a mentor to residents and students at the outset of their careers. Aarti N. Shenoy, MD, MS Dr. Shenoy attended St. George's University School of Medicine then completed an Internal Medicine residency at SUNY Downstate. She then served as the SUNY Downstate outpatient Chief Resident before joining King's County Hospital Center as a Hospitalist. Christine J. Yun, MD Dr. Yun attended medical school at St George's University, and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. She is currently an academic Hospitalist at NYC H + H Kings County. VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Brooklyn CampusDavid M. Frank MD, FACP Dr. Frank is a graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Dr. Frank completed his Internal Medicine training at North Shore University Hospital and his gastroenterology fellowship at the New York VAMC. Dr. Fran has had extensive experience in private medical practice and in the academic setting having held teaching appointments at Temple University Medical School ( GI) , Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and presently at Downstate Dr. Frank presently serves as assistant chief of the medical service and is a staff gastroenterologist at the Brooklyn campus of the NY Harbor VA. Luis Daniel Lugo, MD Dr. Lugo completed his internal medicine residency at Roger Williams Medical Center, a Boston University-affiliated hospital. Prior to developing a career in medicine, Dr. Lugo was a devoted high-school Chemistry teacher in Puerto Rico. He is Associate Program Director of our internal medicine residency program and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Brooklyn Campus. Dr. Lugo is the founder and editor of InternalMedicineOnSteroids.com, a site dedicated to learning activities for residents and students during their inpatient wards rotation. His academic interests include Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and effective medical education. Debora Ponce, MD Dr. Ponce is the Assistant Chief of Primary Care at Brooklyn Veterans Hospital. She obtained her M.D. and residency training at SUNY Downstate. Dr. Ponce's clinical practice specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of congestive heart failure. She is actively engaged in resident education and serves as Associate Program Director for SUNY Downstate. Pooja Belligund, MD Director POCUS elective Lorena M Layrisse Landaeta, MD Dr. Layrisse attended medical school at the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Science Campus and Internal Medicine Residency at SUNY Downstate from 2014-2017. She went to University of Miami for Geriatrics Fellowship where she was fellow of the year. She is double board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Layrisse is currently a primary care doctor and geriatrician at the Brooklyn Veteran’s Hospital, where she is actively involved in resident education. She has an interest in dementia prevention and frailty.
