University of chicago program internal medicine residency

Adam Mikolajczyk, MD  Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency

Message from the Program Director

It is my great pleasure to introduce you to our Internal Medicine Residency Program, one of the finest in the country for those that place a high value on advocacy for underserved patient populations and a well-rounded education.  The excitement of bringing physicians to their fullest potential continues to motivate our leadership team every day.  We strongly feel that our diverse patient population, the family atmosphere of our program, and the autonomy that the residents have is a perfect environment to train the next generation of physicians.

Training Programs

Besides our Categorical and Preliminary Medicine programs, we offer combined Internal Medicine residencies in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics.

This one-year program is designed for individuals pursuing careers in other specialties. Residents in this program undertake a year of training that is identical to the first year of residency in the categorical program.

The combined five-year residency in Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine is designed for those trainees who wish to complement the breadth of skills in Emergency Medicine with the depth of Internal Medicine. Rotating between Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, residents satisfy board requirements for certification in both specialties.

The department’s longest standing combined program, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, is a four-year experience for residents who wish to be experts in the non-surgical care of patients of all ages. These trainees alternate between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics over the course of four years, satisfying board requirements for certification in both specialties.

Specialized Tracks

The University of Illinois Chicago Internal Medicine Residency has specialized tracks that give interested residents a more focused residency experience.

The Academic Internal Medicine (AIM) Residency Track provides additional academic training to internal medicine residents who have an interest in conducting clinical research as generalists. The AIM Track is an opportunity for residents to receive training in public health and clinical and translational research, and actively participate in scholarly activities under the mentorship of Department of Medicine faculty.

The Urban and Global Health (UGH) Track is geared towards residents who are interested in the care of underserved communities both in urban and global settings. This track provides the trainee with the focused experiences in underserved communities both locally and abroad, as well as the tools necessary to undergo a career in the field.

The Innovation in Internal Medicine Track offers opportunities through research collaborations across all schools and departments at UIC and tailors experiences for those with advanced degrees and extensive research experience.

The University of Illinois Chicago is committed to an environment that fosters the development of future physician-scientists. Towards this end, we have a Clinical Investigator Pathway that allows residents to pursue training in internal medicine, with a strong emphasis on research, and a guaranteed position in one of our subspecialty research fellowships.

The UIC StARR Program is an NHLBI-funded career development program that seeks to recruit internal medicine residents of varied backgrounds and experiences to undergo mentored clinical/translational research training related to the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonary, or hematologic diseases that will foster opportunities to help lead the next generation of highly diverse and skilled physician-investigators in the biomedical sciences.
