Published on September 17, 2022

My Dress-Up Darling, known in Japan as “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi o Suru” has certainly proven to be one of the most appreciated anime series of 2022, so many have been waiting for the announcement of a second season with bated breath.

That wait has now ended, s Aniplex has officially announced that a second season is in production.

While the announcement does not include details on air dates or basically anything else, it’s definitely great news for those who can’t wait for more of My Dress-Up Darling’s heartwarming mix of romance, comedy, and a bit of healthy fanservice.

While we did not get further details, the announcement was accompanied by a trailer that showcases some of the best moments of the first series, which you can see below.

The title is expected to appear at the Aniplex Online Fest at the end of next week, so there’s a chance that we’ll hear and perhaps see more then.

If you’re unfamiliar with My Dress-Up Darling, it debuted as a seinen manga by Shinichi Fukuda published by Square Enix in Young Gangan in 2018, and serialization is still ongoing.

The first season of the anime debuted at the beginning of 2022, animated by Cloverworks and aired in the west by Crunchyroll.

My Dress Up Darling season 2 has just been confirmed to be in production, with a new teaser trailer revealing the sequel production.

The 2022 Winter anime slate was dominated by four shows in particular; Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Ranking of Kings and My Dress Up Darling.

The latter series, My Dress Up Darling, was arguably the surprise hit of the anime broadcasting slate, with Marin becoming a global icon for well-written female characters. However, since the the season 1 finale premiered in March 2022, fans around the world have been waiting patiently for news on the anime series’ future.

Well, excellent news has just been shared online, My Dress Up Darling will return with a sequel season 2 – here is everything that fans need to know.

My Dress Up Darling season 2 sequel confirmed

Today, September 17th, it was officially confirmed via the My Dress Up Darling website that the sequel season 2 was now in production!

“Production of the sequel to the TV anime “Sono dress-up doll wa Koi ni suru” has been decided!
A sequel to the TV anime “Sono Kisehae Ningyo ha Koi wo Suru” has been decided! We look forward to your continued support for “Sono Kisebutsu Ningyo ha Koi wo Suru” in the future.” – Bisquedoll-anime website.

Shinichi Fukuda, author of the original manga series, commented how “We are very happy. Thank you very much. I am very much looking forward to it” adding that “I am very glad that I have continued to be a manga artist.”

Alongside news of the renewal, a special teaser trailer was also released on the Aniplex YouTube channel – see below.

Whilst news of the My Dress Up Darling sequel is welcomed, fans of the hit anime series were already confident that Marin and Gojo would continue their budding-romance into a second broadcast. This was because there is both plenty of source material from the original manga series by Shinichi Fukuda for CloverWorks to adapt for a second anime season, and the show is easily popular enough worldwide to merit a renewal.

According to a breakdown from Anime Geek, episode 12 of My Dress Up Darling covered everything up until volume 5 chapter 39 of the manga. The good news is that, as of September 17th, nine complete Tankobon volumes have been published in Japan and the series is still ongoing. This means that there is easily enough source material available to start production on season 2 of My Dress Up Darling straight off the bat .

Then we have the view that the anime series is easily popular enough, both domestically and internationally, to warrant renewal for a second season at CloverWorks. The series is currently scoring an impressive 4.9/5 on Crunchyroll Reviews, 8.1/10 on IMDB and 8.31/10 on MyAnimeList with over 452,000 reviews and 760,000 members.

In fact, My Dress Up Darling was, during its broadcast, the highest-rated CloverWorks production on MyAnimeList since the first season of The Promised Neverland, which premiered back in January 2019. Since then, the title has been surpassed by Spy x Family, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl, Saekano the Movie and The Promised Neverland season 1 once again.

It was therefore a reasonable assumption that the production company would surely be chomping at the bit to produce more anime content for the My Dress Up Darling franchise – excellent news for fans of the hit series.

The series has also maintained an exceptional ranking within the various audience polls that run throughout the anime broadcasting slate. According to Anime Trending, My Dress Up Darling won six-weekly ‘Best Anime’ polls since its debut, featuring in the Top-10 lists for ten weeks straight!

Overall, considering both the availability of source material from the manga series and the anime adaptations’ exceptional popularity with a global audience, it was only be a matter of time before CloverWorks confirms season 2 of My Dress Up Darling – but when could it release?

What date could My Dress Up Darling season 2 release?

Whilst a release window for My Dress Up Darling season 2 has not yet been confirmed, we can make some predictions on its targeted return date based on the production cycle from season 1.

The anime adaptation of the hit manga series was publicly announced in the ninth issue of the Young Gangan magazine back in April 2021. Episode 1 would then debut on Japanese television networks 10 months later on the Winter 2023 anime slate from January 9th.

The only problem with this is the amount of source material currently available to CloverWorks for season 2. As previously discussed, the first season covered up until volume 5 in the manga, with nine volumes being published in Japan.

This means that if CloverWorks wants to maintain their season length of 12 episodes, they ideally need to wait until at least one, if not two, more manga volumes have been published.

Based on author Shinichi Fukuda’s current release schedule for new content, fans can expect the next volume to launch in five- or six months’ time; around November 2022.

Assuming that CloverWorks would be able to maintain a similar production cycle for the second season, anime fans could theoretically see Marin and Gojo return as soon as July 2023; although an October 2023 return on the Fall slate is also highly likely.

How to read the original manga in English

Whilst nine complete manga volumes have been released in Japan, the English launch with Square Enix is lagging slightly behind the domestic run.

Physical volumes of the English version for the My Dress Up Darling manga series can be purchased through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and Indigo.

Alternatively, fans can read the manga via digital platforms, which can be also be acquired through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and Indigo.
