Its not the years in your life that count

A Facebook post claims that President Abraham Lincoln once said, “It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

Verdict: False

The saying does not appear in any of Lincoln’s written works.

Fact Check:

Many web pages that post memorable quotes attribute this saying to Lincoln, but The Daily Caller News Foundation found no evidence that he ever made this statement. It does not appear in his collected works. (RELATED: Did Abraham Lincoln Say, ‘The Best Way To Predict The Future Is To Create It’?)

The saying is also sometimes attributed to United Nations Ambassador Adlai Stevenson II. According to the website Quote Investigator, he used a similar expression in a couple of speeches during the 1950s.

“This quote is often misappropriated to Lincoln,” says Daniel Worthington, director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln, in an email to TheDCNF. “It actually comes from an advertisement in the Chicago newspaper from 1947.”

Indeed, the closest match for the saying appears in an advertisement for Edward Stieglitz’s book on aging in a 1947 edition of the Chicago Tribune, though Quote Investigator found numerous variations of the expression in print as early as 1889.

Harold Holzer, a leading scholar on the 16th president, also described the quote as apocryphal.

We count our age by years, isn’t it? Did you ever think if that is actually the way to count how long did you live? At the end of the day, it is never about the years in your life that counts! It is all about the life in your years.

When we celebrate our birthdays, we usually light the candle by the year of our age, but we tend to forget that it is not about the age or the number of years you have lived.

Living your life is never about the age, but it is always about what did you do to make that life worthwhile? It is not the years of life that should bother you anyway!

There have been a lot of people who have lived so many years yet failed to make anything worthy of sense. On the other hand, there are a few people who died at a very young age, but we still remember them for something that they have done for the sake of others.

Thus, a man is remembered not by the number of years he lives, but by his actions.

Instead of having a prolonged life where you haven’t done anything sensible, it is important to do something meaningful in the years you live.

If you want to make sure that people remember you even when you are gone, try doing something that makes them feel proud of you.

Inculcate life in your years, instead of just counting the years you alive!
