How to use the kiinde bottle warmer

4.0 out of 5 stars I definitely do love this bottle warmer

I definitely do love this bottle warmer. Fits any bottle brand and breastmilk bag. Warms amazing as well. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the warmer had stopped circulating any water. I think for a warmer this price it should definitely not do that 4 days of using it. We did email their customer service and they responded within a couple of hours on calibration instruction. The machine started working again but it was a bit of an inconvenience for a day, especially as a new mom.

I purchased this warmer not for bottles but to heat up kiinde brand pouches which I have filled with homemade baby food. I had bought a big box of pouches to use for pumping my oversupply and ended up not needed as many as I thought I would. In trying to think of a way to use them I found the little squirt tops for baby food and have been storing our homemade food in the pouches since.

Anyway, I wanted something that would heat the pouches from frozen without the need to remember to take them out of the freezer the day before I need them to thaw. Using the warmer is easy enough. It's ready to go out of the box once water is added. The water must be. Added to a precise level and checked frequently. The water spends it's 'downtime' in a reservoir under the warming chamber. This means it must be dumped out, cleaned with vinegar, and refilled every several days. I placed a frozen pouch in the warmer and turned it on for the recommended 9 minutes. After 9 minutes it was still very cold with big pieces of frozen purée. The warming chamber isn't deep enough to accommodate the company's own pouches so the only way to warm them is to start with the pouch upright then turn it over and continue warming with it upside down. A filled frozen pouch takes a full 15 minutes right side up, another 15 minutes top side down, and yet another 4-5 minutes to get it warm as the first 30 minutes will only get it to a cool room temperature. The timer only goes up to 15 minutes so you have to go back twice to turn it back on (I also squished the pouch around each time).

Prior to using the warmer I had been running the pouches under the faucet but that took 20-30 minutes and wasted a ton of water. Then I went to using a little 1.5 quart crock pot. This actually works well and is the method I've settled on. The crock pot on high takes an extra couple minutes to warm up (I do not leave it on all day) but there is no refilling the water to very exact levels or cleaning with vinegar. It's also less than a quarter of the price of the warmer and can be used after the bottles and baby food stage. Everyday I just dump out the old water, rinse it, and refill with clean water. A couple times a week I run it through the dishwasher. The crock pot does not have to be turned back on while warming pouches and it exposes more surface area to the warm water so a fully frozen pouch takes only 20 minutes when started in a cold crock pot rather than the 35 minutes it takes in the warmer. I do flip it over and squish it in the middle of that time but it only takes an extra minute or two if I don't.

Since it says it can be used with different bottles I tried it with both a lifefactory glass bottle and a comotomo bottle. I filled each with water and left them in the fridge for awhile before trying to warm them. The glass bottle had 5oz in it and warmed in 9 minutes with the silicone sleeve. Without the sleeve, which is a hassle to get on and off, it warmed in 7 minutes. This is longer than the kiinde chart indicates but didn't seem unreasonable to me. The comotomo bottle was a different story. I knew it would take awhile so I set it for 15 minutes and came back. Although this is just a small one, not the big 9oz version, it still wasn't warm after 15 minutes. I can handle a longer warming time for occasional use but the timer, which also functions as the on/off switch, only goes up to 15 minutes. In order to keep it on for the 20-22 minutes (depending on how warm you want it) it needs you have to go back and turn it on a second time.

If you don't mind the fuss of very precise water levels or frequent cleanings this is a nice warmer. It's well made, brilliant in it's simplicity, and heats food that stays under the waterline evenly without the worry of burns from hot spots. For partially filled pouches and small 4-5oz bottles it's ideal. The depth of the warming chamber makes it less than practical for full pouches or tall bottles. The biggest problem is the length of time it takes to warm, particularly when it comes to frozen food or milk. I don't feel this is a design flaw, it's just the reality of heating baby food and bottles with warm water rather than steam or boiling water. For these reasons I'm giving the warmer a three star, it's ok, rating.

I was super hopeful for this product since it could warm multiple different ways. Like glass vs plastic bottles, milk bags, frozen and refrigerated and room temp. However, I've had nonstop problems with the timer catching or not going therefore leading to milk that is over heated. I don't feel I should have to start another timer to make sure this one's working but it seems to be the case. Unfortunate... Thankful my baby rarely takes a bottle so it's not a major inconvenience. I'd be upset if I had to buy a whole new one when I've only had this one for 2 months.

Update:
So after about 10 months of regular use (which varies from 1 bottle to 5 bottles when he was younger and I was at work) a day, the timer starting getting stuck around 1-2 minutes.
So I emailed the company on their website, went to take a shower while the baby slept, and when I returned, 3 emails, one the automated response, a second saying ignore that one, and a third from an actual person, asking a few simple use questions and then saying I have a defective unit and a new one will be sent out. Impressive. I like a company that stands by it's product.

Our routine:
1. fresh milk in bag-> roughly 5-6 minutes and then pour into bottle. voila.
2. fresh leftover milk in a bottle (medela)-> 6 minutes, voila.
3. frozen milk in a bag -> thaw under running hot water until breaks into chunks of ice/milk so that it's all at the bottle of the bag (I freeze them on their sides to save space). pop into the warmer. 7-8 minutes, check, sometimes if too icy at first, still cold, squeeze a few times, reheat 1-2 minutes more. done. pour into bottle.

Original post:
Since my husband is the one that gives our baby the bottles, I put it as a 5 star review because he loves it. He places the lansinoh bags (refrigerated or thawed first under hot running water until it's just chunks of icy milk at the bottom of the bag) of breastmilk into the chamber and about 5-7 (if frozen thawed) minutes later, the milk is ready. I bought it for him based on the reviews and because I agree that steaming the milk with other bottle warmers might degrade some of the proteins/antibodies. Also, high heat and plastics bothers us both.

My complaints would be that when you heat a bottle- you need to have about 3 oz in the (plastic medela 5 oz) bottle (not that you would be heating much less ever) to displace enough water so the bottle doesn't float in the bath but stays submerged (hence heating the milk evenly). 4 oz in a medela bottle seems to be the best. Also, our tall (evenflo) glass bottles didn't heat too well, esp if there was more than 3 oz in them, since they are too tall and not wide enough. So I suppose if you were using less milk, a glass bottle would be better for the weighting factor. But as I said, he usually heats in the bags, which are mostly 4-5 oz since that's how I store the milk, and thus, he is more than content.

You do have to make sure the bag/bottle is in the chamber before turning it on. And you should remember to change the water at least once a week (old man forgot initially, since it's out of sight, and was wondering what the smell was) to avoid nasty build-up.

Overall, he is very very very pleased. He just said so.

We absolutely love this bottle warmer! We have a doctor browns bottle warmer and love this one so much more! It’s easy to fill up water to the right level unlike the doctor browns. It’s easy to determine how long to set the timer for and easy to clean.

It gets the job done and fits all my varying size bottles. I didn’t think a bottle warmer would be worth it bc it’s just as easy to just microwave water or use the keurig for ready hot water. But it is definitely nice to be able to just throw a bottle in this and walk away and do stuff. It’s a little tough getting the hang of getting it to the temp you want. I don’t necessary prefer body temp for the babies so I can’t follow the exact instructions for heat up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bottle warmer, great service!

I had this product for 7 months now, we are using it 5-7 times a day and until now it worked perfectly. Unfortunately the timer broke today, I contacted Kiine Kozii and hope for a fast and easy resolution. We will see how it goes. I find glass bottles heat much faster and the estimated time given by the company is exact. With plastic bottles (Tommy Tippee) it took much more time even though we did everything as described in the manual. We really loved this bottle warmer until today, and it the resolution with the timer goes well I will certainly give it a 5 Stars and recommend it to a friend!

Update: So on less than a week I received a new one by express mail. They contacted me after instructing to simply discard the old one. That was absolutely amazing service, effective and professional. They really stand by their products and I would definitely buy again from Kiinde Kozii.

This bottle warmer lasted all of 4 heatings... so disappointing... especially with a baby impatiently waiting as you try for 25 minutes to warm frozen breast milk until you realize that it's not warming the water and it's sitting in freezing water. BTW, I followed all the instructions of washing it almost every day.. don't waste your time... get something else..

1.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working, no customer service

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on March 8, 2017

This product worked fine for only four months. It was used 2-3 times per day during the week only. The motor/pump has now completely stopped working. I have contacted Kiinde LLC Canada twice via Amazon (once last week and once this week) and both times received the message that their email is not working. I cannot find Canadian customer service contact info. We have now been without a bottle warmer for almost a week. Extremely dissatisfying.

Highly recommended! This is a very well reviewed warmer for a reason! This is one of the only warmers that fit a Tommee Tippee bottle. And I believe the only one on the market that works with water and not steam. It's super effective to warm bottles evenly; although it's a bit slower than a steam warmer. It's a much safer and more effective way to warm any bottle.

How long does the Kiinde bottle warmer take?

plastic bottle of breastmilk from the refrigerator requires 6 minutes to heat, whereas a 4 oz. glass bottle from the fridge requires 5.5 minutes. An 8 oz jar of baby food from the fridge requires a full 15 minutes.

How do you heat up Kiinde breast milk?

Thawing and Warming Expressed Breast Milk This can be done by sitting your pouch under a stream of running water, placing the pouch in a cup or bowl of warm water, or using a circulating style of breast milk/bottle warmer (we recommend our Kozii warmer). Breast milk should never be steamed, boiled, or microwaved.

How does the Kiinde bottle work?

Kiinde is a pumping and feeding system where you pump directly into a breast milk storage bag, store the milk in the bag, and then feed from that bag (using a bottle that screws onto it). This way, there is no transferring milk from bottle to bag – which means no spilling – and no bottles to wash.
