Overview of Lodging Near Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park is tucked away in the northwestern corner of Wyoming, just south of Yellowstone National Park.

The park’s 500 square miles is filled with plenty of incredible things to do, from scenic drives to over 200 miles of hiking trails! Grand Teton’s top attractions are located off the famed 42-Mile Scenic Drive.

This route also connects many of the park’s lodges, campgrounds, and entrances.

Grand Teton National Park has seven lodges and seven campgrounds inside the park, spread from the far northern entrance near Yellowstone to the southern part of the park closer to Jackson. All in-park lodging is only open during summer and early fall, making June to September the best time to visit.

Unlike many national parks, there are also plenty of hotel options in nearby towns like Jackson, Wilson, Moran, and Teton Village, thanks to Jackson Hole’s popularity as a winter ski destination.

There are three entrances to Grand Teton National Park. If you plan to stay outside the park, you’ll want to stay near the entrance where you plan to spend most of your time:

• Moose Entrance near Jackson – best all around as it’s close to Jackson and offers good access to most of the park, including Jenny Lake and Mormon Row
• Granite Canyon Entrance near Wilson and Teton Village – best for those spending a lot of time on Moose-Wilson Road hiking or looking for wildlife (it’s important to note this road is only partially paved)
• Moran Entrance in Moran – best for those spending most of their time in the northern part of the park, like at Colter Bay Village, or wanting to stay in the same spot to visit Yellowstone too

Should I Stay in One Hotel to See Both Grand Teton and Yellowstone?

I don’t recommend staying in one hotel to see Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Staying in one place instead of moving to a new hotel will result in hours of extra driving. Instead, I’d recommend finding one hotel for Grand Teton and a different hotel closer to Yellowstone.

However, if you plan a trip to Grand Teton and want to make a one-day trip to Yellowstone, you may find it easier to stay in one place. Just expect to spend several hours driving on that day!

If you choose to stay in a single hotel, I recommend staying at the Headwaters Lodge at Flagg Ranch in Grand Teton or Grant Village Lodge in Yellowstone.

When and How to Book Lodging at Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton Lodging Company manages four of the seven lodges in Grand Teton National Park. These lodges include Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Cabins, and Headwaters Lodge and Cabins at Flagg Ranch.

All lodges managed by Grand Teton Lodging Company release reservations on a rolling 12-month basis. For example, reservations for a stay on July 20, 2023, will become available on July 20, 2022.

Signal Mountain Lodge is separately managed and has differing reservation windows. For 2022, reservations are already available. For 2023, this is the reservation schedule:

• Stays in May and June 2023: Reservations available on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 
• Stays in July 2023: Reservations available on Wednesday, April 6, 2022
• Stays in August, September & October 2023: Reservations available on Thursday, April 7, 2022

All seven campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park operate on a reservation-only basis. There are no first-come, first-served campgrounds in the park. You can make reservations for camping in Grand Teton via Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month basis.

Essential Tips for Lodging in Grand Tetons

• Pick the best location to minimize driving time. For example, staying inside the park or in Jackson can significantly cut down on driving time to and from the park each day, allowing you to see more and have a great time in Grand Teton.
• Visit in the summer when lodging is open. Most lodges and campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park don’t open until late May or early June and close in early October. If you choose to visit in winter, a great option is staying in Jackson, which turns into a ski town in the colder months.
• Consider staying in nearby towns like Jackson, Wilson, or Moran if you’re on a budget. Lodging inside the park can be expensive due to high demand and limited options. I recommend using Hotels.com to find budget lodging available during your trip dates.
• Avoid crowds by starting your day early, especially if you stay outside the park. Trails and attractions are packed from June to September by 9 to 10 AM. Beat the crowds by starting around sunrise.
• Camping inside the park is only allowed at designated campgrounds. No camping is allowed in any parking lot or parking area, including pullouts. There is first-come, first-served camping located outside the national park.

As with most national parks, staying inside the park will save you driving time to popular destinations. Grand Teton National Park is no different. 

Grand Teton offers seven lodges and seven campgrounds, many with incredible walking-distance access to some of the best views and hikes in the park.

Seven lodges are located inside Grand Teton National Park, ranging from rustic cabins to luxury, award-winning lodges. Depending on your travel style and interests, there are plenty of options from which to choose.

• Jackson Lake Lodge is one of the most spectacular national park lodges with jaw-dropping views of the Teton Range, an excellent cocktail bar, and several restaurants.
• Colter Bay Cabins is a community with budget-friendly 1- and 2-bedroom log cabins and several restaurants, perfect for families or groups exploring Grand Teton.
• Jenny Lake Lodge is a luxury AAA four-diamond resort that offers gourmet multi-course meals and unprecedented relaxation and privacy close to the shores of Jenny Lake.
• Headwaters Lodge and Cabins at Flagg Ranch is a rustic mountain lodge with a restaurant along John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, perfect for those also visiting Yellowstone.
• Signal Mountain Lodge is a lakefront lodge with several dining options that offers rustic cabins with kitchenettes in a centrally located spot convenient to most attractions in Grand Teton.

Best Campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park

There are seven campgrounds inside Grand Teton National Park, which operate on a reservation-only basis. These campgrounds are managed by the National Park Service and accept reservations on a rolling 6-month basis via Recreation.gov.

Campgrounds in Grand Teton typically fill up quickly, so it is essential to make reservations six months out as soon as they are released.

These are the seven campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park:

• Colter Bay Campground, located in Colter Bay Village, is open from late May to late September and offers 324 standard sites, 13 electric hookup sites, ten hiker/biker sites, and ten group sites. Amenities include pay showers, laundry, and dump stations. Sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length.
• Colter Bay RV Park in Colter Bay Village is open from early May to early October with 102 pull-through sites and ten back-in sites. Amenities include pay showers and laundry. There are no restrictions on RV length.
• Gros Ventre Campground near Mormon Row Historic District is open from late April to mid-October and offers 279 standard sites, 39 electric hookup sites, and 4 group sites. Amenities include a dump station, and sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length.
• Jenny Lake Campground near Jenny Lake and Cascade Canyon is open from early May to late September and offers 51 standard sites and ten hiker/biker sites. This campground is tent-only and has pay showers available to campers.
• Signal Mountain Campground near Signal Mountain Summit Road is open from mid-May to mid-October and offers 56 standard sites and 25 sites with electric hookups. Amenities include pay showers, laundry, and a dump station. Sites can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length.
• Lizard Creek Campground along John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Highway is open from mid-June to mid-September and offers 60 standard campsites, accommodating RVs up to 30 feet in length.
• Headwaters Campground near the Flagg Ranch Information Station is open from mid-May through September and offers 34 standard sites, 96 pull-through sites with full hookups, and 40 camper cabins. Campers have access to showers, and sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length.

Best Places to Stay Near Grand Teton National Park

While staying inside Grand Teton National Park saves driving time, there are several benefits to staying outside the park, including:

• There’s more availability, and reservations don’t need to be made as far in advance
• Hotels offer more amenities and are more budget-friendly
• There are more dining options, generally with fewer crowds and more budget-friendly prices
• The entrances to Grand Teton National Park are open 24 hours a day, giving you unlimited access to the park even if you’re staying outside the park boundaries.

Best Places to Stay in the Town of Jackson

Jackson is a great place to stay outside of Grand Teton National Park. As the closest sizeable town to the national park entrance, you’ll find plenty of accommodation and dining options here.

Jackson offers a surprising number of boutique hotels and gourmet restaurants for a town of its size.

From Jackson, you’re only 20 minutes to the Moose Entrance near Craig Thomas Discovery Center and Visitor Center. Jackson is also closest to the Jackson Hole Airport (only 15 minutes away!).

If you’re looking for a place to stay outside the park with plenty of amenities and dining options, stay in Jackson!

If you’d rather be close to the northern part of the park, consider staying in Moran, Wyoming instead. This small town located at the junction of Highway 191 and Highway 26 is only minutes from the Moran Entrance to Grand Teton.

Compared to Jackson, staying in Moran is remote and offers few amenities. However, Moran can be an excellent choice for a rustic stay closer to Jackson Lake and Colter Bay.

If you like the idea of avoiding crowds found in Jackson and don’t mind some extra driving to get into Grand Teton, consider staying in Wilson, Wyoming.

This small town offers more solitude than its more happening neighbors, Jackson and Teton Village. In Wilson, you’ll find secluded cabins and B&Bs, perfect for those looking for a relaxing retreat while visiting Grand Teton National Park.

However, you’ll likely need to head to Teton Village or Jackson for more options for dining.

Staying in Wilson offers excellent access to Moose-Wilson Road, home to popular hiking trails like Phelps Lake and Death Canyon, plus plenty of wildlife.

Best Places to Stay in Teton Village, Wyoming

Teton Village is a popular area amongst skiers in the winter, home to the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. However, its many amenities remain open in the summer and offer visitors an excellent location close to Grand Teton.

Here you’ll find a mix of ski resorts and home rentals. In Teton Village, you can also enjoy elevated dining and access to the Teton Village Gondola (an excellent attraction for families!).

If you want to feel immersed in the mountains, consider staying at the base of the Tetons in Teton Village.

Those who stay in Teton Village are only a short drive along Moose-Wilson Road to Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve and some of the best wildlife viewing in Grand Teton.

However, it is essential to note that while staying in Teton Village comes with many amenities, it can also be pricy, particularly at the luxury ski resorts.
