2010 ford focus power steering fluid type

The Ford Focus ST uses the Mercon V type power steering fluid. Power steering fluid is what keeps the energy flow within Your steering system working properly. This hydraulic fluid is key for protecting seals, O-rings; which can become brittle and broken causing serious damage to other parts of Your steering system, such as the power-steering pump. If Your wheel feels "hard" and tough to turn, You might need power steering fluid. Loud steering: Steering shouldn't make sounds. The minute You notice that Your steering wheel is making loud noises, it's time to check the power steering fluid level in Your vehicle. Experts say they typically charge between $99 and $125 for a standard power steering flush.

For Power Steering Fluid,

The manual says to use MERCON ATF.

But there are specific Power Steering Fluid sold in store, will that do better than ATF?

Or shall I use the recommended MERCON ATF?

On the other hand, is Mercon V also ok?

PS fluid is no better than ATX fluid as they are virtually the same, minus the dye and some additives for the ATX clutches.

And why buy more expensive product? Another way the market takes advantage of those less learned............

The only PS fluid that matters would be for a Honda, as some of them use plastic impellers that require a specific fluid.

V would last a while longer but what pollutes PS fluid first is the ground up metal that turns it gray.

Manual says to use MERCON... so use Mercon. Use the Full Synthetic stuff to last longer / better.

Don't think you can get anything other than MERCON V can you unless you look really hard? I put a little bit of the Lucas Oil Power Steering and Rack and Pinion fluid after I have completed the flush. It gives the steering wheel a better feel in my opinion.

To illustrate the point, I have type F old stuff in mine now, using up some old stock free fluid I had lying around.

The original PS fluid for ALL brands of car for 25 years was type A Chrysler ATX fluid.
