Synopsis:

In “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.

‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ rejoins Batman who unwilling to let Superman’s sacrifice be in vain sets out with some assistance from Wonder Woman to recruit other meta-humans for the inevitable battle to come. Unfortunately, they soon realize that the forces they were preparing for have already arrived and begun putting their plans in motion. Now Batman and Wonder Woman will have to hope for some assistance from newcomers Cyborg, The Flash and Aquaman if they’re to stand any chance of combating the deadly Steppenwolf who is only the tip of the iceberg, preparing things for the hopeful arrival of the terrifying Darkseid. As things become more uncertain and the enemy starts to gain the upper hand, this newly formed team of heroes realizes that they may need the help of Superman to pull this off, but the options for attempting to revive him may just have their own dire ramifications.

Directed entirely by Zack Snyder this time around, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio and a story by Terrio and Zack Snyder and Will Beall, Snyder does a magnificent job at the helm of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ guiding along his epic and moving true vision of the film with passion, style and patience. The Snyder Cut includes much of the same cast as the theatrical cut, merely with some additions and it stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Jason Mamoa, Ezra Miller, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J.K. Simmons and more, with each offering pretty solid performances in their respective roles for the most part.

‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ is nothing short of spectacular and a far superior version of the team up film than that which we were initially provided (you can also read my review of the 2017 Theatrical Cut’s Blu-ray release Right Here). It rights nearly every issue or confusing element of the other edition which Whedon took over and melded into another film entirely and improves upon nearly everything that was retained. Snyder’s cut finally weaves together some of what’s been teased and built throughout ‘Man of Steel’ and even more so in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ serving up a massive, 4-hour epic feature that’s rich with character growth, more focus on each of our new heroes and a shocking number of sequences that weren’t present in the Theatrical Cut (including at least a few involving The Flash and Cyborg that are actually quite crucial as well as some of the most rewarding moments for each) as well as correcting other elements such as the appearance of Steppenwolf and the color of Superman’s suit. It also brings many new characters into the mix who were previously absent, most notably the key villain Darkseid who had nothing more than a mere name drop in the other cut, along with some other big characters, many of which also have a significant part to play within the overall story. The Snyder Cut is a beautiful, massive and intense adventure that’s loaded with heart and humor and fans of Snyder’s other two DC films won’t even want to consider overlooking this one.

Overall, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ is quite simply the ‘Justice League’ film we all wanted (even if some maybe didn’t yet know it); a powerful and massive superhero epic with heart and style to spare that fixes many of the issues with the Theatrical Cut and offers an altogether superior version of the film in almost every way. I can’t possibly recommend ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ highly enough to DC fans and fans of Snyder’s first two DCEU offerings in particular. If you think you won’t enjoy it because you weren’t overly fond of Whedon’s theatrical cut, then you’ll want to reconsider because this is a very different beast and a far superior one at that. For those who are hesitant to drop the money on a blind purchase of the Blu-ray or 4K UHD release, I would strongly urge you to at least consider a trial or subscription on HBO Max to give it a whirl; you’ll almost certainly be thrilled that you did.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 1.33:1 4×3 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks wonderful as a whole and offers a sharp, clean and beautifully detailed presentation of the film from start to finish that’s spread between two Blu-ray discs for optimum quality. It holds up great even during the various darkly lit, heavily populated and fast moving sequences of which there are quite a few throughout, and never allows anything occurring onscreen to become negatively affected or problematic at any point. Overall, this is a fantastic high definition video presentation that shouldn’t have any trouble thoroughly pleasing the fans as well as first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a crisp, clean and consistently hard hitting audio presentation throughout that never falters or disappoints. It repeatedly utilizes all seven available channels in order to send characters and action effects zipping throughout the various speakers, along with music, crowd chatter and plenty more, all while making certain that all dialogue and other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously always remain clean, balanced and fully audible. Overall, this is a magnificent Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that delivers impressively every step of the way and should thrill even the pickiest of audiophiles.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ includes one extra in the way of the Featurette ‘Road to Justice League’ (running approximately 25 minutes in length) in which Snyder reflects on his DC trilogy and the journey from Man of Steel to Justice League.
