Newcastle Knights 2022 preview

The big question for Newcastle fans this year is what will life be like without Mitchell Pearce. The scrum-half has moved to Europe in 2022, and the halves pairing of Jack Clifford and Adam Clune will be filling the hole left by his departure. Conor Watson’s move south the Roosters won’t help matters either.

Two seasons of finals football for most sides would indicate a change in the right direction, but many questions remain in terms of whether or not the Knights have the personnel to go to the next level. What is sure is that Adam O’Brian seems to be able to get the right tune out of his players, so they shouldn’t be written off yet.

Jayden Brailey

Jayden Brailey bounced back from injury with a bang in 2021. He played a total of 23 games at hooker, and even co-captained the side. At 25 years of age, you really feel that the next two seasons will see his stock rise further, especially if he is leading the charge for finals spots.

Tyson Frizell

Newcastle second row, Tyson Frizell has played footy at every level, from Origin and Premiership to Tests and Nines. The one thing missing from his CV is a Premiership Grand Final win, and at 30 years of age, you feel like he is getting into last chance territory with the Knights, which should be added motivation.

Mitchell Barnett

Playing 24 games across the 2021 season shows you just how important Mitchell Barnett is to the Knights. The lock will be a force again this year and must stay fit if the Knights want to find that next gear.

Jack Clifford

Halfback Jack Clifford certainly has the potential to take over in the long term from Mitchell Pearce, but is he ready yet? Well, he is about to get thrown in at the deep end in 2022, and we are all about to see whether he can swim.
