The Jumping Frog

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" is an 1865 short story by Mark Twain. It was also published as "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog." In it, the narrator retells a story he heard from a bartender, Simon Wheeler, at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, about the gambler Jim Smiley. Upon discovering a French translation of this story, Twain re-translated the story, word for word and keeping the French grammar structure, back into English. He then published all three versions under the title "The Jumping Frog: In English, Then in French, and Then Clawed Back Into A Civilized Language Once More by Patient, Unremunerated Toil." Summary

Jim Smiley was a betting man. He bet on horse races, dog-fights, cat-fights, even how long it took a straddle-bug to cross the border into Mexico. If there was a bet to be made, chances were the 'uncommonly lucky' Smiley was behind it. So it seemed life easy money when a gullible stranger came to town and Smiley boasted to him that his pet frog-Dan'l Webster-could 'outjump any frog in Calaveras County.' But while Smiley was out scouting for the competition, the stranger came up with a plan to stop Dan'l-and Smiley-in their tracks. The publication of 'The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County' in the Saturday Press in 1865, marked the beginnings of Mark Twain's remarkable literary career. This collection of eight stories upholds his title as America's greatest humorist and storyteller. Includes these stories; 'A True Story'; 'Jim Baker's Blue-jay Yarn'; 'The Private History of a Campaign that Failed'; 'Extracts from Adam's Diary'; 'Eve's Diary'; 'The 1,000,000 Bank-Note'; and 'How to Tell a Story.'

1.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Anticipated from Amazon Kindle!

What with frog celebrations beginning in Manitoba this month I was looking forward to rereading the old classic favourite, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. The downloaded copy which I received was of such poor quality that it drove me to a used book store to buy a hard copy. What a let-down!

I felt like I was "listening" to a man telling a story about how he was led to meet someone that probably didn't exist. Then he tells how he got to soak with the wrong person in his opinion and the tale of that! I was captivated. I couldn't put it down until it's finished it!
Twain writes the way a person talks in daily life (19th century was his era) which makes it easy to read and I didn't feel like a very distant observer. Twain's easy way of writing, like he's talking, makes me feel like Twain is "everyman or woman" and I'm part of his group of friends he talks with!
That's true talent in opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gambling man and a jumping frog make an interesting short story.

This is a charming and very short story about a man who gets trapped into listening to an old man's rambling tale about a gambling man he once knew who had a frog that could jump better than other frogs. It doesn't take long to read and has an amusing ending. It's written much in the style of Twain's other stories and books, so if you like them, you will probably like this.

I have loved The Celebrated Jumping of Calaveras County ever since I first read it in junior high school. It's one of Mark Twain's true masterpieces, full of humor, American wit and wisdom, and Twain's unique view of life. What more could you ask for? The annotated Kindle edition has a very nice surprise at the end -- a selection of sayings attributed to Twain. For $0.99, it's a definite bargain!
