Anyone who has driven a car with manual windows knows how convenient power windows make life. That is, until they stop working. While they may not be crucial for performance, the power windows on your Subaru do make your life more convenient, and it can be frustrating when they won't work. Paying attention to which windows aren't working, and the symptoms that they present, can help you figure out what the problem is. This will make it easier for the technicians at Shingle Springs Subaru to diagnose and fix your Subaru.

5. The Rear Windows Don't Work

If the front windows work just fine, but the rear windows don't roll up or down, you may have stumbled upon the best-case scenario. The most likely cause for this particular problem is an accidental activation of the child window lock. Turn off the lock and try again.

4. None of the Windows Work

If none of the windows work, the windows themselves are most likely not to blame. First, check your vehicle's fuse box; the fuse for the power windows may have blown. A failed relay might also be to blame if none of the power windows are working. If that's the case, the relay may have to be replaced.

3. One Window Works, But Moves Very Slowly

If it's just one of the windows that's not working, its specific symptoms can help narrow down the cause. Does the window roll up and down, but very slowly? There's a chance that the contacts in the switch may be in need of cleaning. However, if that doesn't do anything, the lift motor may be nearing the end of its lifespan.

2. One Window Doesn't Work, But Does Make Noise

If a window won't work at all, listen closely to how it sounds. Do you hear the small whirring of the motor? If it sounds like the window is being rolled down, but nothing happens, then the regulator is probably to blame. This is a system of cables and pulleys that's powered by the motor, and it's what actually moves the windows up and down. That's why you can still hear the motor: it's working away, but the regulator simply isn't responding as it should.

1. One Window Doesn't Work & Doesn't Make Noise

If you try to roll down the window and are met with only silence, there are two likely culprits. The lift motor may have failed, in which case it will need to be replaced. Or, the switch might not be working. If the motor doesn't get a message from the switch, it won't know that it's time to move the window.

4. Blown Fuse

When you attempt to operate the broken power window, give a listen. What do you hear? If you can hear the motor behind the door working as if trying to move the glass, jump down to tip #2. But if you don't hear anything at all when you press the window switch, that could indicate an electrical problem. If there's no electricity getting to the window regulator motor, it can't turn on to move the window. This problem could be caused by a simple blown fuse.

To find out if the fuse is blown, locate the fuse associated with your power windows, and remove it from the fuse box. Your owner's manual should have a fuse box diagram, and a diagram may even be printed on the fuse box cover itself. If the power window fuse has blown, it may just need to be replaced with a new one to get your windows moving once again.

3. Bad Window Switch

If you've checked the power window fuse, and it's in-tact, but the window still doesn't respond when you press the window switch, it could be that the switch itself has broken. Over time, the window switch could break from years and years of use. To have this problem fixed, visit Capitol Subaru to get a new, OEM window switch to replace the broken one. We'll be glad to install it for you in our service center, too.

2. Sticking Window Glass

If you can hear the window regulator motor whirring when you press the window switch, but the window glass doesn't move, you know there's no electrical issue because the motor is working. That means you have a mechanical issue preventing your power window from moving. It could simply be that the window glass is getting caught on the track. You may need to have a technician remove the door panel to resituate the glass, or replace a broken component -- or, this problem might be solved by simply lubricating the tracks on which the window rides as it travels up and down.

1. Broken Window Regulator

The window regulator is a mechanical system that raises and lowers the window on your car. It's all the gadgetry that lives inside your car door behind the door panel -- there's one in every door with a power window. It consists of a metal arm that can extend and retract, which is attached to the window itself. It also has a small motor that moves the metal arm, and thus the window, when you press the window switch.

If the window glass became disconnected from the regulator, the motor has burned out or something becomes stuck in the system, your window might not be able to move. This is a job for our trained Subaru experts at the Capitol Subaru service department. We'll need to disassemble the door to access the window regulator in order to find the faulty bit and replace it.

No matter why your windows aren't working, we can help get them fixed. Visit Capitol Subaru for all your auto care needs!

Why does my power window go down but not up?

When a power window won't go up or down, the issue could be with the window motor. Without starting the car, turn the ignition to the accessory position. Engage the switch for the affected window and see if the voltmeter (if your vehicle has one) in the instrument panel moves even a slight amount.

How do you manually raise a power window?

Grip the window between your palms and slide it up. Stand at the end of the open door and place one palm on the outside of the window and the other palm facing it on the inside of the window. Pressing the glass firmly between your palms, slowly move your hands up to raise the window.
