Southwest Airlines is running a promotion that may help some people save money on winter trips: Companion Passes for Rapid Rewards members who qualify by taking just two flights! The current Southwest Companion Pass promotion goes like this:
Here are the promotion’s complete terms. And you can go to the registration page here. Granted, your “teaser” Companion Pass is good for only two months. But for people who live in cold weather areas, this promotion can give you and someone else an excellent opportunity to get the heck out of dodge — and travel someplace warm. Or if you’re a big sports fan, this may give you the chance to save money traveling to your team’s away games! Keep in mind the promotional period covers several holiday periods such as:
A handful of colleges also take spring break during the eligible dates. This really could be great for families (or groups) of four or more people. For example, two people can register for the promotion — and book separate reservations. Take the trip (it can even be a quick, same-day roundtrip) and start making your winter travel plans with two others who will fly for almost free on your paid ticket. Remember that award travel generally counts as the paid portion of a Companion Pass-eligible trip! So, you can use Rapid Rewards points to pay for your ticket — and then you and your companion are on the hook for taxes and fees (which will probably be about $5.60 each way for each person). If you need a quick cache of Southwest Rapid Rewards points, check out their suite of Chase co-branded credit cards:
Remember, too, that Southwest is a Chase Ultimate Rewards® travel partner. So, you can transfer those points to your Rapid Rewards account. Examples of Ultimate Rewards-earning cards are:

Redeeming Southwest PointsSouthwest points are redeemed through Rapid Rewards, Southwest Airlines’ loyalty program. The best value for your points is booking Southwest flights. Southwest travels to over 99 destinations across the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. Note that rewards flights are subject to taxes and fees from $5.60 per one-way flight. The number of points required for rewards flights varies based on the destination, time and day of travel and other factors. Southwest flights may be the best use of your Rapid Rewards points, but you can choose other redemption options. You can also use your rewards points towards merchandise, international flights operated by other airlines, hotel stays, gift cards and rental cars. There’s also an option to donate your Southwest points to various charities. Another reason to love the Rapid Rewards program is that your Southwest points never expire. The only way to lose your points is if you close your Rapid Rewards account. Compare Southwest Rapid RewardsWhile all of the Chase Southwest credit cards are excellent options for rewards earning, the right one for you depends on your needs and willingness to pay the annual fee. Here’s a recap of all five Southwest Airlines credit card options.
What Is the Southwest Companion Pass? The Companion Pass allows holders to bring a companion with them on any Southwest flight and only pay taxes and fees on the plus-one ticket, which start at $5.60 one way. In other words, if you book a roundtrip ticket for $350, you can add your companion to your reservation and pay only $11.20 for them to join you. To qualify, you need to earn 125,000 qualifying points or take 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year. After you’ve earned the Companion Pass, you’ll be able to use it through the end of 2023, which means people who earn it quickly will reap the most value. You can change your companion up to three times in a calendar year, so if you don’t regularly travel with any one person, you’ll have some flexibility. Depending on how often you fly, having the Companion Pass could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on flights with your chosen travel buddy. Even if you only fly once, the savings can be worth it. Also, note that the pass is good whether you book a flight with cash or Rapid Rewards points. Companion Pass has previously been offered as part of a sign-up bonus for some Southwest Rapid Rewards cards, but no such offer is currently available. While these types of offers can create a faster route to qualifying, lower requirements may mean that the Companion Pass earned won’t last as long as it traditionally does. If your aim is to maximize the value of your Companion Pass, we recommend working towards earning 125,000 qualifying points as soon as possible. Bottom LineIn conclusion, this limited-time promotion is ideal if you want to use your new credit card for everyday spending, upcoming travel or any big ticket items in the first half of the year. Be sure to connect your new card to your favorite online stores, so you don’t miss out on an opportunity to earn. Plus, if you need to book a trip to visit family in another state, book with this card through Southwest to earn even more points. If you’re planning on applying, carefully consider each card and its features compared with its fees. Because the sign-up bonus is the same on each card, the best one for you will depend on which one has features that best fit your travel plans. Read More Southwest Airlines Credit Card Articles
