Someone used my debit card but i have it reddit

Someone in Georgia (I live in California) tried to spend 3000.00 at a home depot on my account. The joke was on him though, as I don't have 3000.00. My fraud alert kicked in immediately and cancelled the transaction and deactivated my card, and since then I haven't spent ANY money, due to not having easy access to my account.

It's been sort of a blessing in disguise, because due to work and school lately I have just been spending money on food when I'm out because I'm stressed and can't be bothered to cook my own meals.

Its been a real eye-opener. Anyone else have similar stories?

Okay, so for the fourth or fifth time in less than 3 years, my debit card information has been stolen and fraudulent charges have been made on my bank account. This happens about every 6 - 12 months. I have three bank accounts at different banks, but only one has ever had fraudulent charges (it’s a credit union, if that matters).

Every time it has happened, I still have the card itself in my possession. All the fraudulent charges are made online or in cities far away from me. This most recent time, they told me that someone had created a fake duplicate of my card and used it in a store in a city several states over from where I live.

It is so frustrating that this keeps happening to me. I feel like I am smart with my debit card info. Although I do use my debit card for online purchases, I don’t go on shady websites. I don’t let people borrow my card and no one else has access to my bank account. So why is my debit card info is constantly being compromised?

I don’t think any of my friends or family are responsible since the fraudulent charges have always been made in places where no one I know lives. Anyone have any ideas? I feel like a big sucker.

Edit: Whoa this blew up overnight. Reading through all your replies now, thank you so much for all the help!!

I was a banker for a large regional bank that I won’t name. When you initiate a dispute and tell them a debit card was stolen it will be shut if it isn’t already. Then you go through and find all of the transactions that are fraud. Depending on the total of the fraudulent charges and the banks policy, we would immediately return that money while the investigation was performed. At the end of those 60 or 90 days, or if a determination is made quicker than the allotted time period, the funds are either left in the account or reversed back out if it’s deemed they were authorized charges.

Do not dispute legitimate charges as that’s fraud being performed by you. Banks and businesses have every incentive to want to figure out whose to blame. The bank is charging back the business until the business can prove with video/photo evidence or signed slips one way or the other.

I did have someone dispute legitimate charges and let’s just say the police were involved at the end of investigation. Something something something wire fraud.

Someone used my debit card but i have it reddit

Just like the title says somehow someone got ahold of my debit card information and used it to make a cashapp and withdraw $500. I have an old cashapp I used once or twice but NEVER shared any details on it and even had a different card linked to it. Is there any way I can trace the cashapp thief to get my money back or report them to the police? Or is it impossible to find out who stole from me does cashapp not send a location or IP after someone has sent money from not the original owners phone?

I must have dropped my debit card in my neighborhood while out on a walk, because someone found it and immediately used it at 3 different grocery stores in my area, spending over $300. I only had $300 in my checking account and had automatic payments set for the first of the month, so by the time I was home and noticed my card was gone my account had -$200 and I was charged $60 in overdraft protection fees.

I immediately froze my card and disputed the multiple fraud charges with my bank, a credit union. I gave them permission to contact the police, but I did not call the police or press charges because my understanding is that I likely dropped the card so I carry some fault. I also transferred enough funds from my savings account into my checking so that I no longer carried a negative balance.

My bank has 90 days to investigate the dispute before they determine if I should get the money back, during which they will provisionally refund my account within the next 10 days. I keep a tight budget but I still live paycheck to paycheck and having $300 less means that I have to temporarily rely on savings or my credit card for expenses.

Are there any other actions I should be taking to resolve this issue? Am I at risk of any further fraud from the person who has my debit card, even though it’s been frozen and I’m getting sent a new one? And is it really going to take 90 days to get my money back (non-provisionally)?

How can someone use my debit card without having it?

Fraudsters can still use your debit card even if they don't have the card itself. They don't even need your PIN—just your card number. If you've used your debit card for an off-line transaction (a transaction without your PIN), your receipt will show your full debit card number.

Can you get money back if someone uses your debit card?

Can I get my money back if someone used my debit card? If your debit card wasn't lost or stolen, you can recover all your money if you report the transaction within 60 days.
