I was helping a friend paint when I first heard Saves The Day, and I was struck instantly. I went out and bought the CD, and it hasn't left my CD player in weeks.
The songs are all catchy and yet not trite. The chord choices are pleasant and familiar but not so much that it sounds like everything you've ever heard before. The songs are also instrumentally well-crafted -- the guitars play off each other and are rarely playing the same thing unless special emphasis is needed. The licks and runs they throw in dance around each other at times, and it almost makes you forget to listen to the lead singer's stuck-in-your-head melodies. The bassist does far more than simply hold down the chord changes, he plays off the guitars as much as they're playing off each other, and as such the listener is constantly kept off guard, never fully knowing how the next chord is going to sound. The drummer paces the songs well, and all in all you end up with a great mix of music that keeps you entertained whether you like interesting lyrics or cool melodies or thoughtful instrumental work. Not to mention that these guys put on a great concert.
If you like guitar rock but are tired of Green Day-esque simplicity of sound and lyric and still want to hear notes and melodies rather than mere distortion and screaming, I highly recommend Stay What You Are. I don't find a skippable song on the album.

*this is a review specifically for the Vinyl version*

This is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I think they need to remaster it for vi vinyl. I read an article about how Johnny Marr believed there was so much music left in the The Smiths master tapes and is why he wanted to remaster The Smiths records; I believe there is much more music buried in the master tapes of this album as well. The vocals and the fuzzy guitars just don't have that warmness and separation that I think they should have. I read somewhere that some records are simply CD to Vinyl recordings so your essentially getting a lower quality version of the CD on vinyl. None the less, great album, just an unimpressive on vinyl, which actually makes sense as this album was put out on a smaller label during a time when vinyl was not being pressed nearly as much... I'd pay $30 for a 180gm remastered version... Well, remastered well of course.

I remember listening to this album a lot back in 2001, and it has aged very well. Definitely more of a mature Saves The Day compared to Through Being Cool and Nebraska. Holds up today as well as it did in '01.

If you're just getting into Saves The Day (like me), I think this a good first album! (though Through Being Cool was mine). This CD will leave you in a better mood than before you listened to it! My favorites are "Nightingale", "This is not an Exit" and "Freakish".

Songs are about: girls (a given lol), social awkwardness, growing up and well..stuff that goes along with being a teenager (or, for me, a young adult) Really great album!

This album was one of the very few bright spots during a pretty dark period in my life and helped me cope with a lot different feelings and for that Saves The Day will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart...Thank you

A classic album and a wonderful addition to my now growing vinyl collection. If you love Stay What You Are and/or love Saves the Day, just do yourself a favor and buy the vinyl. It sounds great.

Details: Lyric sheet is included inside and the vinyl disc is clear.

I loved this album in high school and now its even cooler on vinyl. No scratches and was packaged for album's safety.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums, so I had to buy it on record and have it in my collection. Definitely give this a listen if you have never done so.

3.0 out of 5 stars shame it was broken

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2014

Have been hunting for this for a long time and sadly it arrived broken and badly damaged. Very upset as it was meant as a gift. Would have been nice if it had been labelled as fragile or handle with care so people knew to be more careful with it. Hopefully the replacement will reach me in tact so the person it was meant for can listen to this awesome record on such a lovely format!

4.0 out of 5 stars at your funeral
