Petkit pura x vs litter robot reddit

Hi!

Please help me choose a self cleaning litter box. I've shortlisted Pura Max and LR4 so far.

My constraints are:

  • I have 2 cats one of which is a rather big one - he's 16.5 lbs. He's not fat but long and tall (see photo).

  • I'm going to keep in the bathroom and size matters. I'd say LR4 size is ok but not bigger than that.

Some of my initial considerations:

  • I like LR's 90 day trial policy, good to know I'd be able to return it if for any reason it doesn't work for us

  • I like Pura Max design/look and size better

  • I'm not sure which one is better for my bigger cat?

  • There are quite a few reports out there for issues with leaks/bad odor/etc. and various design flaws for both LR and Pura Max as well as positive reviews so I'm not sure what to believe (probably both)

  • It seems like LR overall has a better reputation, customer service and so it's less risky and possibly better quality?

  • I've been using other Petkit products - automatic feeders and water fountain - and like them a lot

I'm picking up a second kitten (ragdoll) in a few days and was looking at a 2nd litter box but then i stumbled upon the litter robot lll. So i have a few questions regarding this product and it would be great of someone could answer those :)

  1. Will it be big enough for a big ragdoll cat?

  2. Why is 200-300$ more expensive in Europe?:/

  3. Is it really true that u save 50% on litter annually?

  4. Would only having the robot be sufficient for 2 cats or would I need another litter box on the side?

Sorry if those questions have been asked before, I'm just trying to justify spending 700-800 USD for a litter box haha.

I'm thinking about getting one of these, but it seems very new to the US market so I'm holding off for a bit. The reviews are almost universally positive though, unlike the Litter-Robot. I have the LR3 ( my 2nd unit in fact), but I've had numerous issues with them. The pinch sensors are a constant source of annoyance: they corrode and stray litter also makes them malfunction. The DFI sensors (drawer-full optical sensors) are unreliable and need to be replaced for $80 from time to time. My latest set of DFI sensors is a little different so it looks like they've redesigned these, so hopefully these won't fail like the previous 3 sets have. I've also had to replace the cat sensor (the weight sensor) a few times. And honestly, speaking as an engineer myself, the engineering on this unit is just not that great. Parts do not fit together well, it's a pain to disassemble to get to the sensors which need periodic replacement, it doesn't seal well and litter gets inside, requiring removing the globe every few weeks to vacuum it all out, it gives me very frequent sensor-fault warnings on the phone app, and on top of it all, it's very loud.

I recently bought a PetKit automatic cat feeder, and the engineering on this thing is exquisite. It looks like Apple's hardware engineers designed it (and I mean that in a positive way; we'll ignore the "you're holding it wrong" antenna debacle). Things fit together with excellent precision, everything works perfectly out of the box, it looks like it was built to aerospace tolerances in a cleanroom rather than in someone's garage like the LR3. Of course, for all we know PetKit might outsource the engineering and manufacturing to other companies, I dunno, but if their automatic feeder is anything to go by, their automatic litterbox should also be very impressive. The product page on Amazon with all the infographics about the sensors and operation certainly look good, much better than the LR3 and its cheap, easily-corroded bent-metal pinch sensors.

Are robotic litter boxes worth it?

Is the Litter Robot worth it? We don't recommend buying an automatic litter box because, generally, they're expensive, they're loud, their scoops can get gunky or clogged, some models take 30 minutes to 1 hour to scoop, the litter beds are tiny, and the sensors don't work for cats that weigh less than 5 pounds.

Can 5 cats use the litter robot?

Using the self-cleaning Litter-Robot, multi-cat homes will no longer need to worry about constantly clearing the litter box—the unit does it for you. Because you might have two cats, four cats, or even more, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy for how often you should clean your waste drawer.
