We were mystified until we realised the the CD was for Windows XP, way out of date for most computers these days. And in addition, I've now discovered that the audio clips that we are advised to listen to throughout the book actually have to be purchased separately at a cost of around fifty euro. The reading element is fine. As you might expect, the speaking and writing sections are pretty limited and you will obviously need to find somebody to practice your speaking with and mark your writing, but I imagine that would be the same with most other books. But what about listening, the other element the book could do well? The questions are right there in the book and it blithely instructs you to listen to the relevant spoken passage. So we installed the CD that came with the book and went into the audio section (which was full of recordings) to try and find it. After a frustrating 15 minutes looking we just couldn't find the appropriate audio. We looked for clues in the book itself: nothing. Finally in desperation I checked the IELTS website itself (this being an official product) and discovered that in fact the audio passages that you need are not actually included with the book! You have to spend another £40 on the "Objective IELTS Intermediate Audio CDs"! It doesn't mention this anywhere in the book itself, and the CD that actually comes with the book (which could of course have easily contained the relevant sound files) is completely useless. I haven't seen such a cynical attempt to chisel extra money out of the customer for a long time. I feel like IELTS are taking massive advantage of their official status to provide an incomplete product for a premium price. Ultimately, if you choose not to spring the extra £40 for the audio recordings, what you're left with is a book that only really covers reading: just one of the four elements of the actual test.
