Finally have found more detailed information on the Ford Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid with spec WSS-M2C200-C, aka XT-M5-QS that should be used in all manual tranny Foci.

Motorcraft full synthetic manual transmission fluid equivalent

Ford Transmission Fluid Useage Charts and go down to page 5.

It is a 75W-90 gear oil recommended for useage in MTX-75 and IB5 Focus trannies and is also recommended for use in older transmissions that require GL-3 and GL-4 gear oil, as well as Ford Focus manual transmissions.

So go forth and prosper with your choice of synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in your manual trannies!

Page 5 of that article says is that XT-M5-QS replaces SAE 80W. Where do you see mention of GL-3 or GL-4 spec and that XT-M5-QS is 75W-90?

The only mention of 75W-90 I see in that article is part #F32Z-19C547-MA on page 2.

detailed product information on XT-M5-QS....

And I just called BAT and spoke with a tech who said he believes the Torco MTF they sell to be 75W-90, even though BAT or Torco doesn't say that on their website. So if the stock stuff and the Torco MTF pass the touch, smell, appearance test in will go the Torco this weekend to see if its cold weather performance is better than the Ford full synthetic MTF stuff.

Way back in August I contact AmsOil for their opinion on the lubrication issue for the manual transmission in the Focus.

Here is a copy of their reply:

I contacted AmsOil for a second opinion on the transmission fluid issue. Here is their reply:
The Focus manual transmission does specify a special part number, however it is simply gear lube. We recommend our AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W90 Gear Lube (TGR) for this application.

Comments I have a Ford Focus ZX5 with the Zetec engine and the 5 speed manual transmission. Ford lists the transmission lubricant as a "synthetic manual transmission oil" Which AmsOil product is designed for this vehicle's transmission? Thanks.

For what it is worth. And this is why I'm starting my modified tranny with gear lube.

Our tranny uses ATF not MTF.

And FYI my Redline D4 bottle says it's 70w80

Should we use friction modifier also?

Yes. The syncros have a clutch mat'l on the cone part instead of grooves.

How much should we use? Tranny takes 2.1 quarts of fluid. Put 2 quarts of oil then .1 of friction modifier?

I think the friction modifier comes in about a 4oz. bottle. A 1/10 of a qt. is 3.2 oz. Use the whole bottle (or 4 oz.).

So what is it we use? MTF or ATF. I want to change my tranny fluid but I sure don't want a broken tranny because of something I put in it. I'm heading for my Redline dealer Monday so I want the "Right Stuff".

Do friction modifier make a difference?
What was your experience?
If it does then why do we have to add it to the factory fluid? I don't believe that FoMoCo is knowingly filling up the tranny boxes with the inferior fluid.
BTW, the RedLine site states that its fluid has a perfect friction coefficient and doesn't need any other modifiers.
MTX 75 is being produced for years. I mean YEARS.
Why in the world do we still have so many shift quality related problems.

Vad,

This article should answer all your questions, including why you should add friction modifier to ATF.

http://www.redlineoil.com/redlineoil/mtlti.htm

From the statistics that Redline offers, it appears that Redline MTL would be the best choice, as it is similar to the D4 ATF (both are GL-4) but offers better durability while still offering good cold-shifting quality.

75W-90 seems a bit viscous for a transmission that requires ATF, which has a 70W-80 gear oil requirement. MT-90 is just a more viscous (75W-90) version of MTL.

What fluid goes in a Ford manual transmission?

Motorcraft was originally launched in the 1950s and was temporarily discontinued after Ford had purchased the Autolite trade name and utilized it as their primary auto parts brand.

Is Mercon V fully synthetic?

What is Ford transmission fluid called?
