The Glade
The Glade is a large indoor area situated at the center of the Maze, with artificial sunlight, and a square center where all of the Gladers stay. The walls surround the square, only opening during the daytime, and closing at the night time. Anyone who is locked outside the Glade at night usually never returns, meaning that the Gladers tend to stay inside. The Glade is so big, it’s twice as big as a football field.
The Homestead
The Homestead is a place located inside the Glade. It is a small house where the important requirements of the Gladers are stored. It also has a room where the wounded are nursed.
The homestead is also where all the Gladers sleep.
The Griever Hole
The Griever Hole is an invisible entrance/exit through which the Gladers escape the Maze. It is a small hole located beyond the Cliff. It was discovered by Thomas and Minho while running through the Maze after they followed a Griever who rolled right off the edge of the Cliff. Inside the Griever Hole are some coffin type things which the Grievers rest in, and a computer where Teresa punches the code they discovered from solving the Maps. This reveals the exit to the Maze which allows the Gladers to escape, as well as deactivating the Grievers.
The Slammer
The Slammer was a boring concrete building in the Glade with only one lopsided chair and a window. It acted like a jail for the Gladers who had done something bad. Thomas had once been imprisoned in the Slammer. Alby had also once ordered Teresa to be put in the Slammer because he thought she was a threat. It seems to be the most secure place in the Glade.
The Map Room
The Map Room was a place in the Glade where the Maze Runners stored their maps they made of the Maze, believing there to be an answer in the patterns. Upon returning from the Maze, the Runners would disappear for hours, creating maps from their memory of their route through the maze. They would then study the maps, looking for patterns.
The Map Room was burnt down as the Ending approached. However, after Alby’s warning, Newt and Minho moved the Maps to the weapons room in The Homestead and placed dummies in the Map Room instead. Alby later confessed to burning the room down.
The Cliff
In the Maze, the only notable landmark is the Cliff. According to Minho, before Thomas arrived in the maze several Greenbeens had falllen over the cliff. It looks around three miles high to Thomas.
After reading the first 20 chapters of the novel Maze Runner, learners will break into groups and work together to draw a map of the Glade. They will use textual citations from the novel to justify their facts and locations. They will need to decide what group roles each student is going to accomplish then get going on mapping out the four quadrants of the Glade and drawing picture representations of what happens in that section of the Glade.
