Meet APPPA’s Farmers

The best way to buy pastured poultry is go directly to the source — your local farmer. While some farmers do sell pastured poultry through grocery stores and distributors, the overwhelming majority can be found selling from their farm store, farmers market, and local restaurants.

In our current food system, there are many pastured poultry posers and lots of confusing labels on both grocery store brands and specialty providers. It can be overwhelming.

That’s where APPPA comes in. The American Pastured Poultry Producers Association is a non-profit trade organization that teaches and encourages the production, processing, marketing, and purchasing of poultry raised on pasture. All of the farmers in this directory are active and current members of APPPA. You can connect with them directly to purchase humanely-raised chicken, eggs, turkey, ducks, geese and guineas.

Are organic chickens worth it?

Based on nutrition alone, organic chicken isnt worth the money—but it is if youre worried about food poisoning, GMOs, or how the chicken was raised. To make sure any kind of bird is safe to eat: Note whether its plump (which is good) or dry (bad), and check to make sure its not close to the "sell by" date.

How long does an organic chicken live before slaughter?

Organic chickens are slower growing, and more traditional breeds are often used. They commonly grow at half the rate of chickens on intensive farms and live for at least 70 days before slaughter.

Is organic chicken better than free

The very best option is a chicken that has been fed organic feed and is pasture-raised. This will provide you with the most nutritious meal and eggs free from negative health impacts such as low quality feed and antibiotics that industrial farmers like to use.

Do organic chickens taste better?

Since organic chickens' feed is highly regulated, there are rarely shortcuts in what they're fed, so they often end up tasting better than chickens that lack feed regulations.
