Crap... Rain Got In My Car

I left my windows open in my car the other day thinkin that i would be right back out, but it turns out i fell asleep on the couch. It was my luck that a huge rainstorm happened to come by that very day, drenching the inside of my car, and now I lost my new car smell!

and now it smells a little bit muggy inside. Is there any good way to fix this besides something stupid like an air freshener?

Ive done this before, if its not like soaking wet and its just damp, all you have to do is run the car for a long time in your driveway with all the windows up, the heat on full blast with the A/C on. The heater will help dry while the AC takes the moisture out of the air. This has worked for me on numerous times. After that, if its a nice day, park it in the sun with all the windows open, assuming you can do this or trust that it wont get broken into. If its really wet, take a dry-vac to it first to get as much water out as possible and then do the above steps. Should work, it worked for me on a lot of occasions and i got the smell out without having to remove the carpeting or any of that junk.

DIY for getting mildew smell out of rained in car

I worked in a detail shop for a while so i may be of some help what we usually done was

1)removed the carpet and let it dry

2)after you remove the carpet if you look at the fire wall you will see some black rubber it has foam on the back side of it check to see if the foam is wet if it is prop it up and let it dry out before replacing the carpet after you dry it out spray bleach on the foam to kill any bacteria that is growing in there also you may wnt to spray down the floor board w/ bleach make sure you remove the back seat completely or you will wind up w/ little white bleach specks on it

3)next turn the carpet over and peal off all of the padding on the back side of the carpet and trash it once this gets wet you will never get the smell to leave the car

4) now that you are down to the black lining of the carpet scrub this down with some tilex tilex will kill any mildew and it wont discolor the carpeting if it bleeds through

5)if you have access to a carpet shampooer shampoo the carpet really good if not you can probably take the carpet to your local detail shop and they will shampoo the carpet for you for less than $35

6)go to your local carpet company and purchase some home carpet padding and cut it to match the old padding

7) using some spray adhesive (3-m general trim adhesive works the best can be purchased at advanced auto or autozone) glue the padding to the back side of the carpet where the old padding was

8)make sure the the carpet and everything on the inside of the car (including foam on the backside of the rubber on the fire wall) is completely dry and reinstall the carpet

What to do if you left your car windows down and it rained?

Mix eight parts white vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle and spray over the surface until its very damp. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then use a wet/dry vacuum to speed up the drying process. Vinegar works great on rusty tools, too!

How do you dry out a car left in the rain?

Place a portable dehumidifier in the vehicle and roll the windows up. If you have a portable dehumidifier handy put it in your vehicle's back seat or trunk (if you have an SUV) with the doors closed and windows rolled up. Doing this will pull and residual moisture out of the vehicle's fabrics.

Will rain inside a car ruin it?

As the rain falls, it collects pollutants and contaminants in the air. Most people like to believe that rain makes their vehicles clean. However, it actually makes your car dirtier. After a rainfall, the pollutants and contaminants that the rain collects stick to your car and potentially damage your car's paint.

What do you do if your car gets wet inside?

Answer provided by.
Open all the windows and put a fan on the affected area until the water evaporates..
Hang Damp-Rid bags inside of your vehicle for a day or two..
Put a portable dehumidifier in the car..
Use a shop vac or wet/dry vac to soak up the moisture..
