The countdown to Halloween has officially begun as The Midnight Club is about to land on Netflix.

Adapted from Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel of the same name, Mike Flanagan’s new spooky series follows a group of terminally ill teens grappling with their own existence and trying to scare each other with gruesome horror stories.

They’ve also made a pact to try and communicate with each other after death, haunting the halls of Brightcliffe, as they hunt for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.

As they spot ghostly sightings and eery apparitions, and battle their own existence, each night the eight members of the Midnight Club come together to share their stories.

Along with some familiar faces from Flanagan’s Netflix thriller Midnight Mass, recurring cast members from The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor also feature, including Rahul Kohli.

The Midnight Club does not follow on from The Haunting of Hill House or The Haunting of Bly Manor, even though some of the characters may look familiar.

While Hill House and Bly Manor shared similar names and cast members, they weren’t connected either, with Flanagan basing the former on Shriley Jackson’s 1959 novel and latter on Henry James’ 1989 The Turn of the Screw.

Is The Midnight Club based on a book?

The Midnight Club gets its name from Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel, but each episode is titled by another one of his works, following the story each character tells the group.

These include: The Wicked Heart, Gimme a Kiss, Witch, See You Later, Road to Nowhere and The Eternal Enemy.

Flanagan previously shared that he is a big fan of Pike’s thrillers, and reached out to him about adapting his work.

Netflix’s The Midnight Club echoes the premise of Pike’s novel, following the story about young people who are dying, who meet each night to tell each other stories.

Those stories are then adapted by Pike’s other works, which feed into each character’s own arc.

Pike has also revealed that he was a fan of Flanagan’s Hill House series, ahead of them working together for The Midnight Club.

What else has Mike Flanagan made for Netflix?

Flanagan even has his own Netflix category: The Flanaverse, which boasts The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass.

Also included are works he wrote and adapted: Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, Before I Wake and Hush.

Flanagan’s upcoming series The Fall of the House of Usher, based on Edgar Allen Poe’s work, is also in the making.

Several of the cast members including Kate Siegel and Rahul Kohli have teased that filming is well underway, although a release date has yet to be announced.

The Midnight Club launches on Netflix tomorrow, Friday October 7.
