There are mental conditions that leave you feeling more anxious than normal or anxious without just cause. An anxiety disorder means you are more anxious than normal over a long period of time. This disorder can also cause people to have many fears and worries. Various other symptoms may also arise as a result. These symptoms include outbreaks of sweating, shaking or palpitations. You may also have digestive problems or have tensed muscles.

Depression is also a mental illness. When you have depression, your mood is often very low over a long period of time. They may also feel listless or exhausted and find everyday activities harder than before. They can also lose interest in things they enjoyed before. Depression can also cause physical symptoms. This means you can no longer sleep very well, for example, or that you have lost your appetite.

Table of Contents

The key symptoms of depression include persistent sadness or low mood, loss of interests of pleasure, and fatigue or low energy. At least one of these symptoms occur most days, most of the time for at least two weeks.

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

The signs and symptoms of depression can be experienced most of the day, or nearly every day, for at least two weeks. This can include feelings of sadness, anxiousness, hopelessness, irritability, guilt, decreased energy or fatigue, loss of interest, feeling restless, difficulty concentrating or sleeping, appetite changes, and/or thoughts of death or suicidal idealisation.

TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION

Depression can be treated, even in severe cases. The earlier the treatment begins, the more effective it is. Depression can be treated with medication and psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. When treating depression, studies show coexisting illnesses can improve cost and utilisation. Research also suggests pets and exercise can be a potent weapon against mild to moderate depression.

The clinician must ask the following questions prior to identifying specific codes :

  • Is the depression a single or recurrent episode?
  • For those with a PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) score of 20 or greater, is there any form of psychosis?
  • In the case of unspecified single episode depression; the provider needs to provide specific detail

What is the ICD

23 – Adjustment Disorder with Mixed Anxiety and Depressed Mood.

What is the ICD

Code F32. 9 is the diagnosis code used for Major Depressive Disorder, Single Episode, Unspecified. It is a mental condition marked by ongoing feelings of sadness, despair, loss of energy, and difficulty dealing with normal daily life.

Can you code anxiety and depression together?

Answer: According to the AHA ICD-10-CM Coding Clinic (2021, Volume 8, Number 1), depression and anxiety are not automatically linked. This means you should assign separate codes to the two conditions unless your pediatrician has documented that they are connected.

What is the ICD

2 Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder. This category should be used when symptoms of anxiety and depression are both present, but neither is clearly predominant, and neither type of symptom is present to the extent that justifies a diagnosis if considered separately.
