How to use neem oil on roses

As I mature and become more environmentally consious, I have decided to go a much more organic route to gardening.

From what I have read, neem oil mixed with water and a little soap pretty much takes care of most Rose pests after a few applications. Is there any other benefit and what results have you had? I often see this mentioned but never in detail.......

Would also like to know where does evryone get their Neem Oil.....

Thanks Don

hi don,

i get mine from lowes or ace. you don't add spreader/stickers to it (like soap); it already has the oily sticker in it. i put mine into a miracle gro dial n spray and set the dial for 2 tablespoons. whatever you don't use gets put back into the bottle. you can also use a small gallon sprayer and put your 2 tbl. in there or whatever size you have.

neem is an organic miticide/fungicide/pesticide. every 7 days is called for if you have problems, otherwise every 2 weeks is fine. you should spray when there are no bees present and also not in hot sun, therefore i spray before dusk.

neem works topically as a smotherer and systemically too. it also repels. there is really no down side to neem in my opinion.

Hello,

I have just started to grow roses. I only have 2. Does the Neem oil help with black spot or should I use something else. I only say black spot because a few of the leaves are yellow and have little black spots on them. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dee

yes, neem is a fungicide and will help control blackspot. i say help, not eliminate, because you're almost always going to have some blackspot present. having the right kind of roses helps. i also scatter regular store cornmeal underneath the plants for additional control.

OK, thanks. But what does the cornmeal do??

I swear by Neem oil but I'm happy to report I haven't needed to use it so far this year. Probably because the dang bugs are ROASTING in the dang heat before I ever discover them.

i wish my dang weevils would roast. the neem killed the leafhoppers but the weevils are taking longer and are on EVERYTHING woody, not just roses. i'm getting so frustrated. i have cut so much dead out of all the plants and still see damage............i wouldn't wish weevils on my worst enemy! LOL

Great information trackinsand. I am considering making my first purchase and based on your comments it does what they say it does. Controls critters and assists in disease.

Does anyone have anything negative to say about Neem oil or is there a downside to this product!

Sure sounds a lot better than spraying Spectricide Once and Done and a lot more cost effective........

Thanks everyone....

i sprayed this evening before dark. i get a certain satisfaction from it. it has an odd but not unpleasant smell and it will have a chance to do its work and dry before the sun gets hot tomorrow. i have to say that as much as i like the cornmeal for bs, the neem is working so much better. of course, we haven't had any rain yet and when we do finally to start to get it (we will get it, won't we?), that will be a better test. right now we are just hot and humid. i haven't seen any of the other normal bad insects yet this year and i've been doing the neem for this whole season so far, so that's good!

good luck with it and let us know your results. btw, it's an ortho dial n spray, not miracle gro. maybe it's the same thing though. it's the one with the dial on the top. lol

tracks, cornmeal isn't doing it for me either. Nor anything else, tried in previous seasons. I thought cornmeal was super, but that was wishful thinking. I'm not trying anything else, IMO, BS and mildew is just going to be. This I will tell you. My master gardener pal told me that my BS/yellow leaf/mildew, 'might' be due to inappropriate watering, watering that might not deep enough. I have 'yellow leaf/BS/mildew' on one leaf only, on a 5 leaf section. My pal suggests that I water more deeply and see what happens. Okay, HOW do I water more deeply???? I have a slow dripper, which I have to take, rose to rose, and monitor. Does this make sense to more experienced rose growers, and worth the effort??? Thanks. Do not mean to hijack the thread...

sherry, i didn't mean that the cornmeal doesn't work. i did see results. i just like the neem better. i know people have heard me say this before but i'll say it again about deep watering. i use a count system. take your nozzle (on gentle shower if you have it) and count until a one gallon bucket is full. that will give you an idea of how much water is in say a slow count to 30. i stand and count out 30 or 60 or however big the plant is and adjust accordingly. i have no experience with drip systems but it's my guess that they don't do a good enough job to satisfy me. my bigger, more established plants don't require as much watering but i religiously count for the small and the newly planted. i am not a roots only waterer either. the whole plant gets washed at least once a week.

don, my neem at ace figures out to about a dollar an ounce and the lowe's stuff (greenlight brand) is less. not to burst your bubble but while it's not as costly as bayer, the neem isn't cheap to use either. i spray about 100 plants (not all roses) at one spraying at that pretty much eats up a 16 oz. bottle.

Hi Sherry - Although i am new to roses not new to gardening. Deep and less frequent watering is probably one of the best things you can do for your plants. Here are just a few of the favorable things it does...

Promotes deep rooting for a healthier plant

Pushes salts down out of the root zone (yes we have salt in our water)

Reduces the water bill by less watering (frequency)

When I lived in South Carolina and didn't have a drip system I would take a garden hose so it would run at a trickle on Saturday mornings and let it run into my plants for upto an hour and then move it. I only watered once per week and tose were the best plants I ever had.

The further you can push the water down into the earth the happier and bigger your plants will be....

I hope this helps!!!

Don

Ok now I'm confused. Neem is to be used as a folar spray. I also have about 100 plants that will get treated. Just a fine coat is what is called for right?

When I spray with Messenger and use a 1 gallon sprayer, I can spray all my plants with that gallon and have a little left over.

I am assuming that the neem 1 oz to one gallon od water would do about the same, wouldn't it?

Don

trackinsand mid central, FL(Zone 9a) Jun 05, 2008

well, you spray the tops and underside of the leaves to the dripping point. when i used my 2 gallon sprayer with whatever i was spraying (not neem), i had to fill the sprayer twice. now that i am using the dial n spray with the neem, i can't tell how many gallons i'm using but it's not a mist system, it's a full on spray of water/neem. there's the difference, i think. i am also heavily spraying a hedge of indian hawthorn that was riddled with leafhoppers so that is using up quite a bit. i think your way with the mist sprayer will be way more cost effective and give equal results. maybe once i have the leafhoppers and weevils eradicated, i will use my 2 gallon sprayer. i've been going through 16 oz. of neem a week. i should clarify too that it hasn't been a whole season as i previously stated. when i thought about it, i've only been doing it for a month. i guess it just seems like a season.....it's been a long, hot may. lol

Thanks, Don!! Here is the question - how do I water deep?? I have excellent soil, virgin, delta, top toil, used only for cows/chickens, never farmed. If I cannot grow stuff here, lol, I need to find another hobby, huh??!! Likely, I'm trying to hard.

How to use neem oil on roses

dwr857 Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b) Jun 05, 2008

Sherry - The best way I know to deep water is to create a water well around your plants to retain the water. It only needs to be about 3 inches deep and then slowly fill the well so the water penetrates deeply in that spot. The well should begin at the plants limb edges all the way to the base of the plant. This gets harder as the plant gets bigger. This also ensures that the outer most roots are getting water also! I have no clue if my numbers are right but I always figured that 2-4 gallons of water was a normal watering and 8-12 gallons would give me that deep watering. To accomplist this you would need to run the water slowly but since you say your soil is very good, it will make deep watering that much easier.

I have also heard of folks burying a 3 foot piece of 4 inch PVC pipe, the kind with the holes vertically and filling the pipe with 1 inch+ rocks allowing the water to immediately get deeper.

So, Don, could I use a post hole digger, and the pipe would be empty, then add rocks, and maybe a top to keep out mulch, etc, out, some rocks, then water?? How big an area would one of those service?? How often do you fill yours? It is certainly an interesting prospect, thanks!!!!

Track- You cleared up a mis-conception on my part. I always thought I couldn't use Neem because my rose bed routinely gets full, super hot, sun. I thought even once dried it could cook my leaves. Do you prefer spraying in the evening as opposed to early morning for any reason? Given how humid it is here (and I assume in Florida) I worry about anything wet at night.

How to use neem oil on roses

I really like the neem oil, I wanted to do the all "organic" garden, had big plans about drawing the beneficials, my garden is just too small to provide all the things everyone needs to be happy. This year, without the neem, I'm not so sure I would have a garden left. And I'm using it to battle leaf streak on daylilies, it seems to be doing a pretty good job.
I didn't catch the rose slugs fast enough, they still did their damage, but not near like last year. I'm glad have it on hand considering those slugs come 6 generations a year here.
I have heard neem kills good bugs too, which doesn't concern me too much, cause I don't ever see too many good ones here anyway. All bad, all bad, LOL
I used to really hate the thought of using a pesticide, but after all the fighting with the pests, I'm gonna.
Better than my neighbor dumping gas all over the weeds.

trackinsand mid central, FL(Zone 9a) Jun 06, 2008

lady, i spray in the evening because neem WILL fry your leaves if you apply it in the full sun. you're not supposed to apply it anytime the temps are in the 90's. as far as wet leaves at night, well, it rains at night too. we can't solve every problem but neem on the leaves at night is better than plain water. the other reason i neem at night is, as i stated before, it will kill bees and that is one insect i do not want to kill.

crash, neem is approved by the organic council of hoohaa (i can't remember), but it's approved. like you, i find very few good bugs in my garden. i know they're there but there are so many more bad ones. i have to do what i have to do.

peg, they do fall down when i put them there and then squash them with my shoe! LOL

Another caveat is don't use Neem on plants that are stressed (as from drought) or newly transplanted. They don't handle it well.

Sherry, a good way to tell how deeply you are watering is by digging a hole shortly after you water and see how deep the water has penetrated. You need to time how long you watered and then judge if you need to water for a longer period.

We are supposed to water 1" a week here but lately the temps have been close to 100 and it hasn't rained in forever so 1" just isn't doing it. My water bill is approaching the national debt.

Sherry, have you tried soaker hoses? They are effective and easy because they stay in place on the ground around your plants all year 'round. You attach them to your garden hose and turn on the spiggot. That's it. Water is delivered directly to the roots. Hide the hose under mulch to keep up appearances and keep evaporation down.
Soaker hoses have been a life saver for my plants. I can't tolerate the heat, so I don't stay outside when it's over 90 degrees. But all I have to do is run outside just for as long as it takes to turn the water spiggots on, then run right back inside to sit next to an air conditioner.

Robin, Lowe's has the best hose timer in their plumbing section. It is usually with the irrigation supply items. The brand is Mr. Landscaper and it is very intuitive and easy to set with the present time, how often to water, length of time and some other element I can't remember right now. It uses a 9v.battery and it signals when it needs to be replaced which I do about once a year. I have 4 of these and use them year round. Mine are several years old and I have never had a problem with them. I turn the hose on once and forget about it unless I have to change any of the parameters. We have a remote section of the garden where I have one of these set up with a soaker hose and I haven't touched it for years.

I, too, have a question concerning the application of Neem Oil. I ordered the Dyna-Gro product from the Ebay hyperlink provided in this thread. On the container it says to mix with a bit of liquid dish soap (as an emulsifier). Is this right? Many thanks in advance!

How to use neem oil on roses

I buy the concentrated neem oil at Lowe's and you don't need to mix anything to that.
But I would probably follow the labels specs. Some products are different than others.
I started treating my daylilies for some leaf streak a couple weeks ago, and I'm real happy with the results. They look a whole lot better!

When should neem oil be applied to roses?

You can apply Neem Oil as often as weekly if needed during the high insect and disease pressure months of the summer but usually every 2-3 weeks during the summer is plenty to keep things in check.

Can you spray straight neem oil on plants?

You can safely use it on your indoor plants. Neem oil is safe to use indoors to prevent pests and disease. Just spray the leaves to kill pests without having the worry of harming your kids or household pets.

Can I spray neem oil directly on flowers?

Use a foliar spray bottle to apply your neem oil mixture to one small section of your plants. Wait twenty-four hours. If there is no damage from the mixture, you can then thoroughly mist your indoor and outdoor plants, spraying directly onto plant leaves. 5.
