2001 Impala LS 3.8. 75,000 mi.

R&L front hub assembly replaced. (Should have checked harness 1st)
Checked rear harness and R&L connections...cleaned, dielectric grease.

Front left assembly connection leading into original hub was chafed through to bare wire which prompted the change.

Front right assembly connection leading into original hub was broken through at connector on hub side which prompted the change.

ABS and traction light remain on. Service Traction light illuminates for a minute or so and goes out.

After above repairs I had Auto Zone scan it and the following codes remained:

C1216
C1222
C1225
C1226
C1232
C1233
C1248

I am not sure if they are current codes or stored from prior to the fix...the AZ dude was not too clear himself.

I didn't see any obvious damage to harness from sensor clip leading up to main harness on either side but I should have replaced both. I have two harnesses, one for either side, that I ordered. My problem is this. I was under the front end and I cannot for the life of me figure out how the F*#k I am going to access the area to splice and solder in new harnesses! The right looks like a slim chance, but the left is damn near impossible! Any advice or tricks of the trade?
I want to do this but I need some tips!

Also, I am have trouble locating the ground to inspect that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

@463....

I have the right and left sensor harnesses from ACDelco....the problem I have is how to access the friggin' harness. The right side I "may" have partial access but the left side is ridiculous and I have no earthly idea how to get the room. I have contemplated snipping the ties but not sure it will help at all. I need advice, tips, tricks and some karma!

Jack up and support the car, remove the wheel and use a very small screwdriver to unlock the holder clips that hole the split loom covers the ABS wire.
Did you get the harnesses that is plug and play or the one that you have to cut and splice?
When you pull the harnesses wire out of the split loom you will be able to see where the brakes in the wire are.

This is a fairly simple job. I do not understand why you don't have the room to work.

If you got the splice in harness it should have new retaining clips on it. These are fairly simple to remove and change the place of them which, will be required. They simply pull apart. Grab each side and pull apart. You can see where they clip together.

I did this a while back. I simply just cut the old retainers off at the mounting point.

Note: the replacement harness's have different color wires from the stock ones. Will require a multimeter or lightbulb to find out what is positive.

Also leave a little bit of slack at the hub. I turned the steering wheel all the way to either side in order to get an idea of how much wire was going to be pulled.

Be sure to seal all connections really well as the abs system hates moisture. I use multiple coats of liquid tape and then a good wrapping of electrical tape then, liquid tape again to keep the electrical tape in place and from unraveling

FYI: the complete harness does not and shouldn't have to be replaced. The wires usually break at the retaining clip location. So cut the factory harness as far toward the middle of the car that u can. Replace what is accessible.

Also FYI: when you have an abs issue at say ur front left ... The hub, low voltage or something like that, and the ebcm pump codes will all be present. This is what makes it difficult to find out what's wrong. Also why most people start with hubs. Majority of the time it's just the harness however. Or the abs ground which, you should clean or replace as well. It's under the factory airbox and adjacent to the a/c accumulator

@463 and @G25racer.....

I bought the Delco OEM sensor harness that plugs at the hub and splice on the other end.

Like I said, the sensor harness (LF) from hub towards front of car up control arm splices into main harness and is jammed into a space that is stupid tight with zero play. Are you saying splice it more towards the control arm? I thought I needed to follow it to main harness and get it at the splice there...

The RF is under radiator on the frame rail midway where splice occurs and I may have a shot at that as it seems a bit easier...I should have included a picture!

No you do not need to splice it directly at the main harness. In fact I would advise against it as sealing the connection would be more difficult.

So yes cut the wires closer to the control arms and in reach

@g25racer....

That made more sense! I couldn't figure how the hell I would get into harness....clearly I was not thinking about this logically!

I found the right front harness wire completely cut and rotted through. The left didn't outwardly appear bad which makes me think that some of the codes were of the older stored history type. Regardless, I replaced both. I need to tune up my soldering skills a bit, but it worked out...I muddled through and cleaned it up.

I spliced, sealed, re-sealed and sealed again...what do you know...The ABS lights are off!
( hopefully I didn't just jinx myself!).

Thanks for all the help folks! On to the next project...chasing a small oil leak.

It's nice to see a planed repair come together. THANKS for sharing your results.k3:

How much does it cost to fix ABS on a Chevy Impala?

The Best in Auto Repair The average cost for a Chevrolet Impala ABS control module replacement is between $663 and $707. Labor costs are estimated between $141 and $177 while parts are priced between $522 and $530.

How many wires does an ABS sensor have?

Two different types of Hall effect ABS sensor are used in cars, with either 2 wires or 3 wires. The 3 wire Hall effect ABS sensor has a simple power supply and a signal wire with the signal voltage (Us) going to the ABS ECU, shown in figure 1.

What happens if a wheel speed sensor fault is set in the ABS control module?

When an ABS wheel sensor fails, it causes the anti-lock brakes to be inoperable. Anytime a fault is noticed, the system triggers an alert, and the ABS warning light comes on. From here, the vehicle's electronic control module stops receiving valuable data from the sensor.
