How to get urine out of bed

While you may hope to avoid mattress stains at all costs, things happen. Pets, children, and even adults can all have accidents in bed. Luckily though, there are surefire ways to get pee smells and stains out of sheets and mattresses – you just need some patience and a little elbow grease.

When dealing with urine in your mattress or sheets, it’s important to know that wet and dry pee have different cleaning needs. Depending on when you clean up the accident, you may need a different approach.

When cleaning urine stains you’ll need these materials:

  • hydrogen peroxide
  • baking soda
  • dish soap
  • a spray bottle
  • a few cleaning rags or paper towels
  • a vacuum

If it’s cat or dog pee, or if the stain is dark and has been dried onto the mattress for a while, you may also need white distilled vinegar, an extra spray bottle, essential oil to help combat the odor, and enzyme cleaner, which is specific to pet stains.

If the urine is still wet:

Step 1: Strip the bed and put your bedding in the washing machine, especially if there’s urine in the sheets.

Step 2: Gently blot (don’t scrub) the wet area with your cleaning rags or paper towels to soak up as much liquid as possible. Avoid scrubbing because that can push the urine further into the mattress.

Step 3: Create a cleaning solution using equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water with a few squirts of dish soap in a spray bottle.

Step 4: Spray the area with your solution and blot away any excess moisture.

Step 5: Cover the area in a layer of baking soda and let it sit for as long as possible. A minimum of eight hours is recommended.

Step 6: Vacuum the baking soda off the mattress and check for any remaining stains or smells. If necessary, repeat steps four through six until the stain and odor are gone.

Step 1: In the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap solution, if you have a full 8-ounce squirt bottle filled, add three tablespoons of baking soda. If you have less than half filled, add half the amount.

Step 2: Generously spray the solution onto the stained area.

Step 3: Allow the solution to soak in and wait for it to dry. You should see a baking soda residue form after a few hours.

Step 4: Vacuum the baking soda and check the stain. If it persists, repeat the process.

When removing the urine smell from a mattress, baking soda works wonders. Baking soda deodorizes and absorbs mattress smells rather than just masking them.

Steps for removing urine smell from a mattress:

Step 1: Spread a thin layer of baking soda across the entire mattress surface. Generously add baking soda over especially strong-smelling spots.

Step 2: Let the baking soda sit uncovered on the mattress for five to 10 hours, then vacuum it. Repeat as needed.

Step 3: To help cover up any lingering odors, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice to a spray bottle filled with water. Spray over the entire surface of the mattress and let it air dry before putting your bedding in place.

Because dog and cat pee is more concentrated and acidic, it can have a much stronger odor. This means you may have to use another kind of cleaner, like an enzyme cleaner, to get rid of the stains and smells and prevent your pet from having another accident on the mattress.

Steps for removing cat and dog urine smell from a mattress:

Step 1: Combine 8 to 10 ounces of hydrogen peroxide with 3 tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap.

Step 2: Use the solution to cover the stains, or spots where the smell is coming from, and let sit for about an hour.

Step 3: Use a damp cloth to rinse the area.

Step 4: Blot the area dry.

Step 5: If the above solution doesn’t do the trick, use an enzyme cleaner like Nature’s Miracle. These cleaners are made of certain enzymes that break down stain-causing substances. These cleaners also help prevent pets from marking their territory again.

Accidents happen, but if you want to protect your mattress you may want to look into buying a mattress protector. Mattress protectors are typically designed like a fitted sheet and protect against dust mites and allergens. Some mattress protectors are also waterproof or water-resistant, protecting your mattress from spills and liquids.

Mattress protectors are a good option if you’re looking to keep your bed in good condition for as long as possible. Because mattress protectors are just meant to be a protective layer between you and your mattress, they are rather thin and don’t alter the feel of the mattress.

However, if your mattress is covered in stains, it may be time to invest in a new mattress rather than a mattress protector.
