How to fix electronic throttle control on jeep patriot

On Tuesday July 19th, the red lightning bolt came on on my way to work, but the car still drove normal. When I got to work, I disconnected the battery for a bit, reconnected it, and the light went off. Then on Saturday when leaving my home, the light came back on and my car immediately went into limp mode. I was able to get it back home and then took it to the mechanic on Tuesday. When I drove it to the mechanic, the lightning bolt light was not on, but the engine light was. The mechanic can not get any lights to come back on since they have had it, and it is not showing any code history of the issue for them to pinpoint what to fix. What should I do?

How to replace the throttle body?

Remove air cleaner and duct hose with a screwdriver. Disconnect electrical connector on the MAF by pulling out the plug. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor in the air duct.

Disconnect idle air control on the side of the throttle body by pulling the electrical connector. Disconnect the throttle position sensor opposite the throttle cable levers.

Disconnect throttle cables by turning the throttle lever on the throttle body all the way open by hand and removing the now slackened cables from the throttle lever.

Remove bolts running through the throttle body and into the intake manifold. Use ¼-inch drive socket and ratchet, lift the throttle body off the intake manifold. Protect the metal gasket that is in between the throttle body and intake. This gasket must be reused. Install new throttle body in reverse order.

Electrical Throttle Body Installation Notes

After replace throttle body, the idle speed is usually high, unstable or engine fault light on.

This is because car ECU stores the original throttle parameters, and the newly installed throttle body parameters are inconsistent with the original.

Now you need to match throttle to the computer. The matching process actually is to clear the original memory of the ECU, and restart the self-learning.

When there is no matching computer or the computer cannot match, you can use the following manual method to match.

1. Disconnect negative pole of the battery line to eliminate the memory function of the ECU, and install it after 1 minute.

2. Turn off ignition switch, unplug EFI and ETCS fuses in the fuse box in engine compartment, and put it back after 1 minute The above two methods are to eliminate the ECU's memory, if idle speed is still high, ECU can return to normal speed through 1-2 days of self-learning.

Jeep Patriot owners have reported 26 problems related to throttle control warning light on (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2012 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the fuel tank valve would close while the vehicle was being refueled. Beaver county Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram (2761 constitution blvd, beaver falls, PA 15010) was made aware of the failure and diagnosed that the fuel tank rollover valve was defective and needed a fuel tank replacement. The vehicle was also taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that there was a recall related to the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 12v142000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure mileage was 199073 also another time my 2012 Jeep Patriot while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled the throttle control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact related the failure tonhtsa campaign number: 13v120000 . Car stalls at every stop. While driving high way speeds for a few minutes it drops down in speed causing you close call accidents because it is very sudden. If I drive the Jeep and come to a complete stop regardless if at stop sign red light or behind traffic the car will turn off having me to turn the key in off position and put it in park to start it again. If I am on the highway driving I can be going 45 mph and all of sudden the Jeep starts declining in its acceleration and will not go above 10mph. Also when initially starting up if I have to back up it turns off while in the middle of backing up. This issue is been known to happen to a few people who I know that own the same exact Jeep or the 2012 model. Also have had it checked out and only thing that pops up is a code for the gas cap which I have replaced and still pops the code for it.

4 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/11/2020

I was driving on a road into work at no more than 40/45 mph. My car was at a slight incline when the electronic throttle control light and electronic stability control light came on, and my car powered down to a low level and wouldn't increase its speed. I pulled over to the side of the road, put the car in park and shut it off. I was able to start the car and drive the rest of the way, and the light didn't come back on again.

5 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2012 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/13/2020

A few months ago my vehicle started to randomly stall and jerk. We thought nothing of it. Then a few weeks ago my engine light came on and a warning that something was wrong with the fuel cap. A few days later all of that stopped coming on. Yesterday as I was pulling out of my neighborhood several lights came on for the stability control and the electrical throttle light came on as well. I was going up a hill and my vehicle barely made it up the hill. I got back to my driveway turned it off and tried again and it was the same issue. I've made an appointment at the dealership to find out the problem, but this came out of no where. I haven't tried to drive the vehicle for safety reasons.

6 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/04/2019

Vehicle throttle control lights comes on when car is in motion which will then slow down the vehicle which can cause an accident that you can no longer control the steering wheel. When that light comes one the engine light and traction control lights come on as well. When on the highway car will lose acceleration which again you can't pull over it will just stop. This is very dangerous and can cause death. I have read so many more of the same complaints something needs to be done about this.

8 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/23/2019

I've done a lot of research and many other Jeep Patriot owners are having the same problem with the throttle body. I was attempting to accelerate on a 40 mph road that people are known to fly down and when I stepped on the gas pedal my car did not accelerate but completely lose the ability to accelerate. My car stopped in the middle of the dangerous road as 3 lights simultaneously appeared on my dashboard; the lights were the throttle control warning light, traction control light, and transmission warning light. I was scared to death and acted quickly but this is simply unacceptable and unsafe. Will Jeep simply wait until this causes the death or serious accident of motorists? I believed the throttle body was dirty so I cleaned it out following standard procedure, however the throttle warning light still appears and my vehicle struggles to accelerate. I will be taking it into the shop very soon but this should not be the responsibility of the vehicle owner, this is extremely unsafe and uncalled for when the vehicles suffering have less than 50,000 miles.

11 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2015 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Over the past month the throttle body control light, check engine light, and traction control light has come on when I go to accelerate. Just like others have reported, it comes on when I'm driving on the highway & just dies, you can't steer the car or anything. Or you go to accelerate and it dies & you almost get rear-ended. I cannot believe how many reports are on here similar to mine and there has been no recall although it looks like there was one for the 2016 Patriot. What will it take, someone dying? this is a huge safety issue when your car will just die while driving 65-70 mph & you can't steer or anything!.

12 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2014 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 12/25/2018

While driving my car began jerking and the throttle control indicator light began flashing and my car lost power unable to accelerate. This is the second time this has happened to this car, the first time being 1 year prior coming down a mountain. It was fixed and now here I am again with the same problem!.

17 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2014 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

On three occasions in the past two years and three months my 2014 Jeep Patriot began surging and stalling during highway driving. Each time this happens the electronic throttle control indicator light comes on. The solution offered in the owners manual is a real joke, because it instructs the owner to pull over, put the car in park, and turn the car on and off several times until the system resets. The second time this happened I took the Jeep to a Jeep dealer who said they downloaded new software that would solve the problem. However, it did not correct the issue, four months later it happened again. This is not a solution, it is a dangerous band-aid and Jeep should issue a recall and fix the problem.

18 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2012 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/10/2016

While on the freeway, speed 65-70 my car suddenly lost all acceleration and a winding noise accompanies the loss. Sometimes the temp gauge or electric throttle light will light up. This has happened a total of 4 times over the past 2 months. All 4 times I have been able to wait an hour, start the car drives normally. After each occasion I've taken the car to a Chrysler Jeep dealer. Either they say it's a misfire, or I need a tune up or an ignition coil. I've since had all these repairs and the issue continues. This is very unsafe. I've had my kids in the car every time, thankfully I avoided getting rear ended and now drive in the slow lane not over 65 mph just to be prepared for my Jeep to do this again. I'm scared to drive this car.

19 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

While driving down our driveway to the main road the electronic stability indicator and the electronic throttle control lights came on. I turned the ignition off and back on then went to the bottom of the road to get on the freeway when the lights came back on and the car went to a limp mode. I had no throttle to get on the freeway and limped back home. Our mechanic could not get the scanner to duplicate the lights. . Since this happened once before, he recommended replacing the throttle body part #4891735ac due to high rate failure at a cost of $533 parts and labor to us. After reading of many complaints we feel this part should be recalled for the safety of occupants before someone gets seriously injured.

20 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2012 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/17/2015

I was driving my 2012 Jeep Patriot on the highway when simultaneously, the electronic throttle control light started blinking red, my car started to jerk forward, and lost power. This reoccurred several times on the way to get it looked at. Each time it happened, I had to shut the vehicle off, wait a few minutes, and then restart. I took it to a Jeep dealer and without even looking at it, the guy said it would be about $600 to fix (even though I still have power train warranty). This to me looks like this is a reoccurring problem that Jeep is aware of, but is not doing anything about. Luckily each time this happened, I was able to pull over and avoid an accident, others might not be so lucky. Until this problem is resolved, my Jeep is not safe to drive.

21 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/22/2015

While driving through town (under 40 mph), less than half a mile from departure from my house, the engine cut out. Lost engine power and power steering. Electronic throttle control light and the oil temp light both came on. Was able to move the car to a side street, turned the car off for a minute, and then back on. Upon turning on was able to drive home to switch vehicles. Less than two months later the same issue occurred. Engine power and power steering were lost.

22 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/10/2015

While driving the vehicle at 45 mph, the electronic stability program indicator light came home causing the speed to immediately drop down to 20mph. I was able to pull the car over and turn the engine off. I waited and the car started back up fine. The next day, while driving, the electronic throttle control light came on and immediately shut my car off. I was able to force the steering wheel to turn into a parkin spot. After trying to crank the car, it finally started and the light didnt come on. The next day, had the oil changed and new spark plugs put in. The car drove fine at first and then all of a sudden while on a busy highway, the spped dropped to 10mph. I was able to keep going and stop and turn the vehicle off. It took several attempts to restart the vehicle but finally got it. This vehicle is extremely dangerous and needs a recall to have this taken care of!!! it is going to take someone getting seriously injured to have something happen.

23 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

Over the past year my Jeep has been very sluggish, accelerates at higher rpm's than normal, "shifts" rough ( even though it is a cvt and doesn't have gears). For example, when I slow down to make a turn and then proceed to accelerate after the turn, my Jeep hesitates to accelerate, the rpm's plummet and then reach to over 3000 rpm's before it slams/jerks into gear to return to around 2000 rpm's. Twice my Jeep has shuttered and stalled while at red lights. Last week after backing out of my driveway, as soon as I put it in drive the electronic throttle control light started flashing and dinging at me. My Jeep went into "limp mode" and I was not able to travel 8 feet from my driveway. I pulled to the side of the road and attempted to restart my Jeep 3 times, and every time I had the same "limp mode"/electronic throttle control issue. The check engine light did not come on at all. The manual states that "if the light is flashing when the engine is running you may experience power loss, an elevated/rough idle, and increased brake pedal effort, and your vehicle may require towing. Immediate service is required. ". This does not sound safe. I had it taken to a certified auto mechanic who said it was a throttle body issue and that I would need to have it replaced. However, Chrysler/Jeep has 1,500-2,000 throttle bodies on back order and I was told it would take several months to even receive the part. I'm glad that my Jeep did not stall or go into "limp mode" while traveling on the highway as this could cause a fatal accident. I consider myself lucky, even though I am now making car payments on a vehicle that will not run. This is also my only vehicle. There must be a major issue with the throttle body to have 1,500-2,000 on back order and should be looked into.

24 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/08/2014

The car was in drive, however the gas pedal was not accelerating the car. It jerked several times and felt like it was going to stall then the electronic throttle light came on for a short time then went out- I took it to my mechanic he confirmed the car needed the throttle body however there are none on long island there are more then 450 on backorder coming from overseas!!!! it has happened intermittently for the past week and I cannot get it fixed. I am afraid the it is dangerous. Apparently if I am not able to find this part on long island this may be an issue that Jeep Chrysler should be addressing. There are only 60k miles on this car.

25 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/07/2014

The throttle control light came on while driving and the car's speed dropped to zero causing me to quickly pull off the road, it would not accelerate. The mechanic found that the throttle control module/throttle body has to be replaced. This part is currently on national backorder since there are over 700 other Jeep owners with this same issue. This is a dangerous malfunction since your car just dies in the middle of traffic and you could easily be in a severe accident due to the malfunction. This seems to be happening to hundreds of other Jeep owners, it seems like this should be a recall for a part malfunction.

26 Throttle Control Warning Light On problem of the 2007 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly decelerated. The vehicle was then stopped and shut off. Upon restart, the electronic throttle control light was illuminated. The failure had occurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the mechanic stated that the failure was due to the electrical system and the vehicle would have to be taken to a dealer. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified and they offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 74,000. The VIN was unavailable.
