Creating a unique password is an important step in securing your home network. This article will show you two ways you can change your WiFi password:

  1. From the CenturyLink app (for some modem models)
  2. from your secure modem settings, which you can access on a computer or other connected device

Note that you may also want to customize your network name (SSID) to make it easy to recognize.

Customers with the Zyxel C3510XZ modem, please follow the instructions to change Zyxel C3510XZ WiFi settings.

Password tips

If you are prompted to choose 64 bits or 128 bits, follow these guidelines:

  • 64 bits: Enter 10 characters*
  • 128 bits: Enter 26 characters*
    * Characters can only contain letters between A-F and numbers between 0-9 with no spaces.

In all other cases, your custom password must:

  • Be between 8 and 63 characters long
  • Contain at least one number from 0 to 9
  • Contain at least one letter from A to Z
Note: The space character can be used (but is not required)

Helpful hint: If you lose or forget your password, you can always log back in to the Wireless Security menu and choose "Use Default" for the password. This will change it back to the original one printed on the modem sticker.

You can update your Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi password in the Google Home app.

Network passwords are alphanumeric. This means that they’re a combination of letters and numbers. But there are some restrictions.

  • Passwords must be between 8 and 63 characters.
  • No spaces. Make sure that there isn’t an accidental space at the beginning or end of your network name or password.
  • No special characters.

If you change your network Wi-Fi password, all of your devices will be disconnected from Wi-Fi until you update those devices with the new password. If you forget to update your password on a device, after seven days the Google Home app will provide a network insight to let you know that a device can’t connect.

Reuse an older network name and password

If you reuse a network name and password from an old router, you won’t have to reconnect devices that were previously on the network.

Note: If your old router is still broadcasting a Wi-Fi network, you may experience odd behaviour because some devices will be connected to your Wi-Fi router or point and others connected to your older router. Enable bridge mode on your old router or if it’s not needed, turn off your older router to fix this issue.
