Passport Online

Nearly all Irish citizens can apply for first time passports and renewals online.

It is the quickest way to get an Irish passport

Passport Online remains our priority service as it facilitates us to process your passport application more efficiently.

Nearly all Irish citizens can use Passport Online to apply for their first passport or to renew their passport. We are issuing over 90% of Passport Online applications within our advertised turnaround times.

When you use Passport Online, you submit an Online application and then send (by post), the required supporting documents.

Once we receive your documents, you can use our Passport Tracker to get updates on its current status. Most applications have 5 steps as outlined below.

  1. Application received: We have received your Passport Online application. We cannot process it until you send us, by post, the required supporting documents.
  2. Alert: We have received your application. You must submit your supporting documents to proceed with the application.
  3. Processing application: We have received your supporting documents. We are now verifying these documents.
  4. Processing application: Your application is being processed.
  5. Printing: Your Passport book is being printed. Any documents submitted will be returned separately.

First time applicants

First time applications are the most complex as all documents need to be verified. You should not book any travel until you have received a passport as these applications cannot be expedited.

You need to submit extra documentation and for children, the consent of all guardians has to be verified.

Complex renewals/Child renewals

This is when you have to submit extra documentation or you are changing information on your passport. For example, this could be changing your name or a lost or stolen passport. All applications for children are complex renewals. This is because the consent of all guardians has to be verified.

Postage time is not included in the average turnaround time. Postage will be longer for applicants outside of Ireland.

Simple adult renewal

This is where you are an adult who needs to renew your Irish passport. We normally do not require any supporting documents.

Once you have made a paper based application, it cannot normally be expedited and we cannot return your supporting documents to you.

If you submitted a paper based application through an Embassy or Consulate abroad, please see the Embassy website for your country of residence.

You can apply for a Dutch passport for yourself at a City Office.

Conditions

  • You must visit a City Office in person. Do you want to apply at the City Office Zuid or Weesp? Then you need an appointment.
  • You must hold Dutch nationality and be registered as a resident in Amsterdam, or have a postal address that is registered with the City.

Choosing a Dutch passport or ID card

A Dutch ID card costs less than a passport, but is valid in fewer countries. If you will only be travelling within Europe, then go to Apply for an ID card. Visit rijksoverheid.nl to view the full list of countries that you can visit with a Dutch ID card.

Are you under 18?

  • Apply for a Dutch passport for children.
  • Apply for a Dutch ID card for children.

Lost or stolen?

If your passport is lost or has been stolen, you can apply for a new document at a City Office. You can submit an 'attestation' at the City Office stating that it was lost or stolen to prevent identity fraud. You do not have to file a police report before applying for a new passport.

If your passport was stolen in a foreign country, you need to file a report with the local police there.

What you need to bring

You need to bring the following to the City Office:

  • A passport photo that complies with official guidelines. We recommend using a professional photographer.
  • Your current Dutch passport and ID card, if you have them. Bring them along even if they are expired.
  • If you have recently gained Dutch citizenship: your (valid and expired) foreign travel documents and your residence documents from the IND.
  • Preferably your bank (debit) card, otherwise cash.

How long does an application for a Dutch passport take?

Your new passport will be ready after 6 working days. You can choose whether you want to collect it or have it delivered. You must make an appointment to collect your passport.

Making an urgent application

If you apply before 14.00, you can collect the passport the next working day after 10.00. If you choose an urgent application, it is not possible to have your passport delivered. An urgent application costs more than a standard application.

Emergency passport

Do you need a passport on the same day? You can apply for an emergency passport from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, for instance at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In that case, you will have to go to a City Office beforehand and apply for a new Dutch passport or ID card and request an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database. More details about obtaining an emergency passport are available at rijksoverheid.nl

Costs and validity

You pay for the passport when you submit your application.

  • A Dutch passport costs €75.80
  • An urgent application costs €127.40

A passport is valid for 10 years.

Delivery or collection

When you apply for the passport, you can choose whether you want to collect it or have it delivered. You cannot change your mind later.

Having your passport delivered

The new passport can be delivered almost anywhere in the Netherlands, and delivery can be scheduled for evenings and weekends if preferable.

  • You have to pay €16,05 for delivery.

  • You will have to take delivery of the passport yourself. Each family member receiving a new passport must be present when the passports are delivered.
  • Children who are 12 years and older must sign when receiving their passports. If the child is under the age of 12, then the adult who submitted the application must sign for them.
  • Passports that are still valid when the application is submitted must be handed in to the delivery officer. The delivery charges will be paid to the delivery officer. These charges can be paid by debit card or cash. The delivery officer does not carry money and so cannot give change back.

Collecting your Dutch passport in person

You must collect the passport in person from the City Office where you submitted the application. You have 3 months to collect your new passport.

What you need to bring:

  • Your collection receipt.
  • Your current passport, if it is not yet expired. You will have to hand it in to the City Office.
