Modifications:

If you prefer not to have mushroom pieces in your ground beef stroganoff recipe, just leave them out! You will still keep the cream of mushroom flavor, though.

Ground Beef not your thing? Use ground turkey or pork!

You can even use regular pieces of meat, like stew meat in this recipe instead of the ground hamburger meat!

For a richer and creamier stroganoff, add in about 8 ounces of cream cheese right before putting in the noodles.

Stroganoff Cooking Tips & FAQs:

If you have fresh mushrooms, you are going to need to cook them up first. This is done pretty quickly in a large skillet over medium heat using olive oil as well as salt and pepper. You can use any oil you prefer, actually.

It will take approximately 4 minutes for your sliced mushrooms to be the desired texture. Then, you will remove the mushrooms.

Add the beef, onion, and garlic until the beef is browned. On most stoves, ground beef takes 7-10 minutes to become fully cooked.

If you used a fatty meat, you will need to drain some of the grease off before continuing.

Reduce the heat. Then, stir in the sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, and beef broth before allowing to simmer for 5 minutes.

Prepare the egg noodles according to the package directions to al dente.

Add the mushrooms back into your skillet before also stirring in the cooked noodles.

Make it a meal:

WHile this stroganoff is a one-pot dish, you could still add some extras to stretch it a bit futher.

It would pair very well with hearty vegetables like green beans or steamed carrots.

Then, enjoy this Frozen Banana Caramel Pie after dinner.

What is stroganoff sauce made of?

Sauce Ingredients: Butter, onion, garlic, white wine, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, flour and plain Greek yogurt (or sour cream) are the ingredients used to make classic beef stroganoff sauce.

What can I use instead of sour cream in stroganoff?

Two of the best substitutes for sour cream in beef stroganoff are: Greek yogurt and cream cheese. This recipe uses 1/2 cup of full-fat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. Greek yogurt has the slight acidic “tang” that is closest to the flavor of sour cream.

How do you make beef stroganoff better?

The longer you simmer, the more tender it will be. If it starts to get low on broth, you can add some extra. The 2 hours in the recipe is important, even at 1 ½ hours the meat is still not tender enough, it's been tested that many times. I think what makes this the best beef stroganoff ever is the sour cream sauce.
