Why does the water filter light show on my refrigerator?

When a refrigerator water filter is replaced, the light may need to be manually reset. If you replaced the fridge water filter but the “Change Filter” light stays on, The light on the display panel needs to be reset.

Is the refrigerator filter installed correctly?

First, if the light on your refrigerator is indicating the filter needs changed, is the new water filter installed correctly? Check to be sure it is sealed to the fridge and locked in place and no leaks.

If the new water filter is installed correctly and the filter light is still showing, you will have to manually reset the water filter light. The refrigerator needs to be told a new filter has been installed.

What causes the red water filter indicator light to show on my fridge?

The refrigerator may be factory set to change the filter every 3 to 6 months. Some filter lights sense the water flow and will recommend a new water filter after a certain amount of gallons flow through. Other water filters have a microchip in them that tells the fridge computer that a new water filter is installed. Some refrigerators just count the time (usually 6 months) from when you last reset the water filter light manually. On refrigerators like these, you will have to manually reset the water filter indicator every time you install a new water filter.

I changed my filter, but my refrigerator filter change light is still on!

We often get questions on why someone’s refrigerator filter change light is still on after they have installed the replacement filter.  Often times a customer wants to know if the filter is defective.  There is a very slim chance of a water filter being defective.  Instead, the most common reasons are that the change light needs to be reset.  Typically, this light is a timer meant to remind you to change your filter every 3 to 6 months.  However, some change filter lights do gauge the flow of water and recommend a replacement filter.

So, how to reset your refrigerator change filter light?  Just following these steps:

Step 1:  Make sure that your filter has been installed correctly and that it forms a good seal.  Always check for any leaks or cracks on your filter or your filter receiver.  If it does not feel like the filter has locked into place, then remove it and start over.  Very little force should be used when replacing the filter.  Make sure that you do not strip the threads.  If you strip the threads installing the filter, all other filters will not make a tight connection with the receiver.

Step 2:  Once you have installed your filter, you have to tell your refrigerator that there is a new filter.  Remember, this is a reminder light (similar to a 6 month timer) telling you that it is time to replace the filter.  Some refrigerators change the light based on time and others based on water flow rate.

Color Guide:

Green:  This indicates that the filter is new and does not need to be changed

Yellow:  This indicates that the filter is about half way through its life expectancy

Red:  This indicates that the filter needs to be changed.

You can almost always get a full six months out of your filter.  Red does not mean you can no longer use the filter or that your water is not being filtered.  It just means you should change it as soon as possible.

The following is a guide to changing your filter for some refrigerator brands:

Amana –  Press and hold the “Auto” and “Dispenser Lock” buttons (may have a padlock on them), until the water filter status indicator light flashes.

Frigidaire – Press and hold the “Reset” button.  The indicator light will flash and then reset.

GE –  Press and hold the “Reset” button for approximately 8 to 10 seconds.

Jenn-Air – Press and hold the “Light” and “Lock” buttons until the filter light flashes (allow up to 10 seconds).

KitchenAid – Press and release the “Light” button 5 times.

Maytag – Press and hold the “Light” and “Lock” buttons until the filter light flashes for approximately 8 to 10 seconds).

Samsung – Press and hold the “Ice Type (Cubed or Crushed)” and “Child Lock” buttons at the same time for approximately 3 to 5 seconds.

LG – Press and hold the “Filter” button or “Reset” button for approximately 5 seconds.

Whirlpool – Press and release the “Light” button 5 to 6 times quickly.  This is the button that turns on your light inside of your refrigerator.  It is usually located at the top or bottom of the door where it closes.
