Something about the rhythm and beat found in clapping games has always pleased me. When I took a trip out of my country right after I graduated from high school, I was tickled and intrigued to discover that kids in other countries play clapping games, too—and there are recognizable songs and rhythms heard everywhere!

What Is a Clapping Game?

Clapping games, which are also called hand games or street rhymes, are usually played by two people working as a team. The players sing a catchy song or chant a rhyme as they clap their hands together to the beat.

Players often have to perform unique moves during the game, like clapping high or low, slapping their knees, or even spinning or dancing between claps. You don't really "win" a clapping game, apart from doing a perfect performance of the moves with your teammate!

Let's Play Some Hand Games!

I think the world would be a far happier place if we all spent some time engaged in this fun, cooperative activity, so I wrote this article to remind readers of the rhymes and games they might recognize from their schoolyard days. I'll share some old standbys below. But don't kid yourselves into thinking that these games are an outdated activity. There are always new hand-clapping games being created!

• Double: Make fists with your hands and touch your partner's knuckles.
• this: Clap palms with your partner.
• that: Clap the backs of your hands with your partner.

How to Clap

There are two ways to play this game (that I know of—there are probably many more!).

For the first option, you can chant the rhyme while doing the following actions on the last three words of each line. For example, for the first line, do these actions on the repeated word "Mack":

• Mack: Slap your knees.
• Mack: Clap your own hands.
• Mack: Clap your partner's hands.

For the second option, you can chant the rhyme while doing the following actions for each word. For example, this is how you'd do the first line:

• Miss: Cross your arms and slap your own shoulders.
• Mar: Uncross your arms and slap your own thighs.
• y: Clap your own hands.
• Mack: Clap right hands with your partner.
• (pause): Clap your own hands.
• Mack: Clap left hands with your partner.
• (pause): Clap your own hands.
• Mack: Clap hands with your partner.

No matter which option you choose, continue following the same pattern for all the remaining verses.

How to Clap

As the lyrics imply, clap your hands faster and faster at the end of this chant until you goof up—or end with a flourish!

4. Pretty Little Dutch Girl

(This one is sung rather than chanted.)

I am a pretty little Dutch girl, as pretty as I can be.

And all the boys in the neighborhood are crazy over me.

My boyfriend's name is Mellow, he comes from the land of Jell-O,

With pickles for his toes and a cherry for his nose,

And that's the way my story goes.

How to Clap

This song has two clapping options as well. The first option is easier, while the second option is better for older children.

• am: Slap your knees.
• pretty: Clap your own hands.
• Dutch girl: Clap your partner's hands.
• (rest): Clap your own hands.

Repeat this sequence in rhythm until the end of the song.

Older kids can try this version:

• Have you: Clap your own hands.
• ever: Clap right hands with your partner.
• ever: Clap your own hands.

• in your: Clap your own hands.
• long: With your arms extended, hold your left hand palm up and your right hand palm down, then clap your partner's hands.
• legged: Switch to holding your left hand palm down and right hand palm up, then clap your partner's hands.
• life: With your arms up, clap your partner's hands palm-to-palm.
• seen a: Clap your own hands.
• long: With your arms extended, hold your left hand palm up and your right hand palm down, then clap your partner's hands.
• legged: Switch to holding your left hand palm down and right hand palm up, then clap your partner's hands.
• sailor: With your arms up, clap your partner's hands palm-to-palm.
• and his: Clap your own hands.
• long: Spread your own hands far apart.

Repeat this sequence in rhythm until the end of the song.

Here's a fun added suggestion: On "sea, sea, sea," clap your partner's hands normally, then clap the backs of your hands together with the backs of their hands, then clap their hands normally again.

8. Playmate

Say, say oh playmate,

Come out and play with me,

And bring your dollies three,

Climb up my apple tree,

Cry down my rain barrel,

Slide down my cellar door,

And we'll be jolly friends

For ever more, more, more, more, more.

How to Clap

The first sequence below is the easier one, and the second sequence is a harder version of the game for older children.

On the syllable "play-", begin to do the following motions:

1. Slap your knees.
2. Clap your own hands.
3. Clap your partner's hands.
4. Clap your own hands.

Repeat this sequence throughout the song.

This version is a bit tougher:

• play: Slap your knees twice.
• mate: Clap your own hands twice.
• (rest): Clap your partner's hands once.
• come: Clap the backs of your hands with your partner once.
• out: Clap your partner's hands once.
• and: Clap your own hands once.

Repeat this sequence in rhythm throughout the song.

9. Hambone

(This one is great for a group of people, since you clap independently.)

Hambone, Hambone, have you heard?

• Lines 1–2: Alternate clapping your hands and slapping your knees.
• Lines 3–4: Alternate clapping your hands and slapping your thighs.
• Lines 5–6: Alternate clapping your hands and tapping your chest.
• Lines 7–8: Alternate clapping your hands and tapping your shoulders.
• Lines 9–10: Alternate clapping your hands and tapping your head.

10. Let's Go on a Bear Hunt

(Okay, this is not technically a hand-clapping game, but it's a good time all the same! In this game, the children repeat the lines after the leader, and there are actions to perform for certain lines.)

Let's go on a bear hunt.

All right.

Let's go. [Tap your hands on your thighs to make a "walking" noise.]

Oh lookie,

I see a wheat field!

Can't go around it,

Can't go under it,

Let's go through it.
