Charleston area medical center family medicine residency

1973

Founding Year

The Internal Medicine Residency is a traditional educational program that recruits the most competitive candidates and trains them to become competent and safe clinicians. It is expected that they will become clinical and academic leaders in their communities. Our ever changing medical landscape makes for a challenging and exciting arena to improve our educational processes, clinical care and research opportunities. The program is a joint effort of Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and West Virginia University School of Medicine.

This partnership offers a university atmosphere in the setting of a community hospital. Benefits of this collaboration include:

  • A Diverse Faculty. Our faculty are committed to helping residents achieve all of their educational goals and to being fully prepared for the next stage of their career.
  • Outstanding research support. In addition to having a dedicated research coordinator for Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, the CAMC Health Education and Research (CHERI) provide support for study design, statistical analysis and publishing your results.
  • Didactics. Every week the faculty and residents participate in daily noon conferences, grand rounds, and resident presentations. Additionally, journal club, QIPS, Board Review, cultural presentations, and clinical discussions are part of the educational exchanges taking place on a regular basis.
  • Mentoring. The faculty and residents interact in an atmosphere of camaraderie and respect, a truly conducive medium to practice and learn. The program has developed a mentoring program that allows the residents to select their faculty mentor to help with through their daily challenges of being a resident.

Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) is a 900-bed plus tertiary care facility, and because there are no similar institutions in the area, the volume and type of clinical pathology seen is unique.

And so, the significantly large clinical volume and the variety of pathology treated at CAMC allow physicians in training to accumulate an unparalleled experience. We are pleased to know you might be interested in our program, and we would be equally pleased to answer any questions you might have.
