What you need to know about the puppy I bought on Craigslist

On March 20, 2022, I answered an ad for a 17 week old Spring Spaniel dog on Craigslist. The person was Tami L. Haskell of Athens, TX 75751. Here is what the ad said.

“male 17 weeks shots and wormed The grandkids are allergic to him 🙁 he needs a home soon he has papers asking a rehome fee far cry from what I paid for him. please be serious and not waste my time no scams codes just real people that want a nice pup. hes sweet just about all house broke does great cat safe.”

I got scammed on Craigslist.

The ad I answered on Craigslist said her grandchildren were allergic to the dog, so she was having to rehome him for fraction of the cost of what she bought him at. I should have known then. Dogs are not an investment, they are family members! Anyway…

When I spoke with her on the phone, it sounded like she had tons of pups in the background. We met in person at Lowes, she informed me he was the last of thirteen puppies she was selling online. Her ad said nothing about her selling a litter of puppies. This dog was very fat, had no energy, and acts like he has lived in a cage his whole life.

He finds a security spot and won’t come out of it. I assumed he was kenneled a lot due to his pictures. He looked very sad and afraid in all of the pics she posted. I recently seen another one of her puppies for sale on Craigslist (same breed), and it looks very sad and scared too. I am having to put my dog in classes to try and adjust his emotional crisis. I am hoping classes can help pull him out of his anxiety.

When I got him, his canine teeth were filed down. The ad she placed on Craigslist was very deceiving.

The puppy was very fat and lethargic when I picked him up. He fell down every time he tried to stand for the first night. He was panting very hard and unusual. I believe she drugged him before we picked him up. His canines were filed down. His ears were very dirty.

The puppy is afraid of noises and finds a spot to hide and will not come out of it. something is very wrong. I have had him for 3 and half weeks and he is finally beginning to run and play. He will not touch any toys and if he puts anything in his mouth, when we look at him, he drops it and runs to hide.

We do not recommend buying a puppy from this lady. She lied to us and we think she is either a puppy reseller or a puppy mill. Please beware. Don’t buy or rehome a dog from her as we have seen she does not take care of her dogs. She needs to go out of business, and we hope this story will help others. We learned our lesson to never buy a puppy from a picture and to always meet the mother dog and see where she lives. Video chats, videos and photos are not a replacement for seeing firsthand.

We do not recommend buying a puppy online and it is not safe to buy any dog online. Breeders selling online and through websites that direct ship puppies by air, nanny or truck are most likely USDA licensed.

The risks of getting a poorly bred puppy as well as supporting the inhumane treatment of its parents are high with USDA breeders. If you are not able to pick up the puppy in person, see the mother dog and where she and all the breeder’s dogs live, you might be supporting a puppy mill.

Over 1 million puppy mill puppies are sold online each year and it is in your best interest to make sure your new puppy is not coming from one of these breeders. There is no excuse for a breeder that won’t let you see where the dogs live.

To maximize profit, female dogs are kept pregnant, bred at every heat cycle to produce as many puppies as possible. The breeding dogs are usually kept in wire cages, many times stacked. The breeding dogs are not groomed, they are not given opportunity to exercise, nor do they know the touch of a loving hand.

The dog are denied basic veterinary care, and most are living and breeding with painful conditions such as urinary tract infections, ear infections, rotten teeth, infected eyes, tumors, infected mammary glands, and sore feet from standing on wire cage floors — that never get addressed.

It is important to know that any breeder can be a puppy mill. It’s hard to imagine the breeder you are talking or texting with could be a puppy mill. If the breeder has excuses why they won’t let you see where they keep the breeding dogs or you are not able to meet the mother dog in person, we suggest you find another breeder.
