I'm currently employed and for the most part I like my job. I become annoyed with process here and there, but overall I'm happy. I'm underpaid in my field, but I know I work in a pretty casual work environment.

Anyways, a former co-worker reached out to me and said there was a position at her place that she thought I would fit and asked for my resume. I sent her my resume and a few days later got a call from a recruiter. They wanted me to come in for an interview in 4 days. I told them before I commit to an interview I would need the job description and salary range. She sent me the job description and said the salary range cannot be discussed. I declined (politely of course).

My friend thinks I'm an idiot and that I was rude for asking what the salary range was. I feel it was a fair question. I'm currently employed and like my job, for me to take time off from my current job to interview for something I have no idea what the salary range is doesn't make sense to me. Would you interview for a job if it was for a possible pay cut? I respect their right to not share that information, but I don't think it's out of line.

Am I wrong? I would really like to know so I'm not going about it wrong when I do decide to leave my current place.

I was recruited to apply for a job that I'm interested in, slight jump up from my current title, but with a lot more growth opportunity.

However they don't have the salary range within in the job description. I asked the recruiter about this and they replied that they follow the instructions of the employer (their client) when sharing salary information.

This position's salary could fall in a pretty wide range, including well below my current salary, which is pretty close to the top of the range for this title. I really don't want to waste everyone's time if a significant salary jump is not in the cards. But I also don't want to throw off a good opportunity by focusing on this one detail.

When is it an appropriate time to ask about salary? I don't want to have to go through rounds of interviews and prep only to learn the offer on the table is far below my current salary, even with negotiation.

I'm currently very happy in my job. There are only a couple of reasons I would willingly leave to work somewhere else, one of which is a higher salary. Before I was here, I got through a few rounds interviews before learning a different company was offering less pay than I was making (really even the same pay isn't worth leaving in most cases unless there are other perks). It ended up being a waste of everybody's time simply because salary wasn't disclosed upfront and I've always been taught it was rude to ask.

Is there an appropriate way to get this information earlier in the process? I get recruiters messaging me several times a week but only one has ever included this in their initial message. I think some will feel that it's off putting to ask, but the reality is that salary is one of the only reasons I would leave.

It seems like a catch 22 for it to be considered rude to ask upfront but also rude to go through an entire interview process just to turn it down when you hear the proposed salary if you knew that was important from the beginning.

Asking for salary range before interview reddit

I get a message every couple of weeks from either headhunters or HR employees from other companies (based on their email addresses) asking me to come work for them. Most the time they are asking me to do the exact same work as I am doing for my current company.

Is there a way that I can ask what salary they are offering without interviewing? I don't want to go on interviews every 6 weeks just to be offered 10k less or even equal pay.
