S10 appropriate handling- letter to the secretary from re copy of letter addressed to mr james lentz, president and ceo of Toyota motor sales, regarding safety problems with the 2010 Toyota rav 4 the consumer stated when there was snow on the street with slipper road conditions, the abs engaged, which made the brakes inoperable. The consumer stated she has been to the dealer on several occasions, only to be told there was nothing wrong. There have been several situations, where the vehicle would not stop when the abs engaged. On one occasion, the consumer had to push the brake all the way to the floor and eventually landed in the middle intersection of oncoming traffic. The second time, she almost rear ended another vehicle, when suddenly the vehicle accelerated when she applied the brake. The only way, she was able to stop the vehicle, was by turning into another lane which caused the abs to go off which rendered the brakes to work again.

2 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2011 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Rav4. The contact was driving 50-55 mph when the brakes were applied and the brake pedal felt loose, became stick. The vehicle was taken to three dealerships where a diagnostic was performed and all three dealers were unable to locate a failure code. The vehicle was also test driven but the failure was unable to be duplicated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 4,991 and the current mileage was 8,613. . . . . Updated 06/18/12 the consumer stated the brakes were spongy and the bas did not engage the distance to stop vehicle.

3 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2005 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Rav4. While driving approximately 25 mph with the brakes engaged, there was minimal resistance. The anti lock braking system engaged in order for the contact to stop the vehicle. The check abs brake and track warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test and confirmed that a faulty abs activator caused the failure to occur. This was an internal failure which prevented the brakes from communicating with the computer. The repair part#44050-42161 is required to repair the failure at an estimated cost of $3000. The manufacturer was called and stated her warranty was no longer valid. She was expecting a call from a Toyota representative. She filed claim#1006300590 with the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were 21,613.

: the contact stated while attempting to apply brake pressure the brakes had excessive travel and sponginess. This occurred at various speeds without warning during normal braking on normal roads. 5 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2004 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/01/2005

: the contact stated the oil was completely depleted in the vehicle before it reached 12000 miles. On a dry road, the vehicle's stopping distance was greatly extended, and greater force than usual had to be applied to stop the vehicle. It was taken to the dealer who suggested calling NHTSA.

6 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2004 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/29/2004

2004 Toyota Rav4. Consumer states vehicles lurches forward the consumer stated within the first three months of driving the vehicle, he noticed when he would brake, such as approaching a stop sign, the vehicle would lurch forward. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. The consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer again and t\hey found the abs actuator was not pumping properly. The consumer has since traded the vehicle.

Failure Date: 08/24/2001

While coming to complete stop by pressing abs brakes, vehicle suddenly accelerated and hit a stonewall. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details. Consumer has taken photographs of vehicle/ wall and ground, showing no tire marks.

Rear brake drums made a noise. When applying brakes,they grab and pull, making vehicle jerk. Also, front brakes would grind, and stopping distance increase when brakes are applied. Contacted dealer ,and dealer stated there was a technical service bulletin on vehicle, but consumer can't get adequate information.

10 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 1999 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/01/2000

While vehicle is traveling at any speed, and in order to depress brake pedal and stop vehicle, consumer had to "stand on brake pedal. Dealership has examined vehicle five times, and failed to determine a cause for this problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.

Failure Date: 11/08/1996

Failure on the brake pedal, when applying force to the brakes, the brake pedal makes a clicking sound and will jump up and down and goes to the floor, causing the vehicle to continue to move.

The brakes screetch when applied. The sound is particularly startling if the brakes are applied quickly. This sound is not the "wear sensor" sound (dealer checked brakes and said they are fine). This sound is different than the standard squeky brakes you hear on some cars and is very concerning. The windshield would rattle while driving (dealer put in a gasket and sound stopped).
