Alphonso mango tree for sale near me

The most popular variety of mango in India, which is also big on export, it is popularly known as hafoos or hapoos, hapus. The best variation of alphonso mangoes are those from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.

Mangoes are usually grown from a healthy 2 to 4 foot tall (.6 to 1.2 m) nursery tree. Buy a tree that has no sign of wounds or other damage to the trunk, particularly where the trunk meets the soil.

Choose an area of land that doesn’t bake in full sun. The tree will become very large if not pruned, so make sure it will have enough room if you plan to allow it to grow to its natural size.

You’ll need to dig a large hole that is 4 times the width and 3 times the depth of the mango tree’s container. Place the tree in the ground and use the original soil to fill the space around the roots and base of the tree. Firm the tree in with your foot to remove any air pockets and then water it well.

Unless your tree will be exposed to strong winds, there shouldn’t be a need to stake it.

You’ll need to water two times a week for the first few months of growth.

Care of & Pruning Mango Tree

Your mango tree will need weekly watering during its first three years of growth. After this you’ll only need to water it during extended periods of drought. It’s not necessary to water during fall or winter.

In the early years of growth you can create a framework of lateral branches by pruning. Do this after harvesting the mangoes to increase the amount of fruit your tree produces.

When pruning, choose a few of the upper branches each year and use loppers to remove them back to their original join point (crotch). It is better to keep your tree to a maximum of 15 feet (4.5m)… left to its own devices it may grow up to 30 feet.

You can fertilize your mango tree with a liquid organic seaweed fertilizer as the fruit begins to form on the tree and again as the fruit matures.

Alphonso mango is an Indian cultivar regarded by many as the gold standard of all mangoes. They have a sweet flavor with hints of apricot and peach. The pulp is deep orange, very aromatic and exceptionally juicy. Ripe fruits are greenish-yellow to yellow in color.

Most fruit trees can be grown in a container.  Follow the recommendations below...

  1. Start small with a tree in a 3 or 7 gallon container
  2. Every 6-10 months transplant the tree to a higher capacity container
  3. The ideal container size to grow fruit trees is 10-15 gallons, so you can move it indoors during the winter months, if necessary
  4. Make sure your container has draining  holes on the bottom of the container, so that any excess water can drain

Follow the simple instructions below to plant your tree on the ground...

  1. Choose a sunny area for planting with about 15 feet radius of clear space
  2. Dig a hole on the ground... twice the height of the container, if possible
  3. Do not mix any potting soil, manure, fertilizer or anything with the soil when you plant
  4. Take the tree out of the container by laying in the side and slipping the container off, if may be necessary to push and tap the bottom of the plastic container
  5. It is usually necessary to put some of the removed dirt back into the hole
  6. Bury the root ball so the soil level is the same as it was in the container
  7. Leave a mound around the tree for form a basin, fill with water, washing the soil into any empty pockets around the root ball
  8. Now is the time to fertilize. Be extra careful because trees are very susceptible to burning with excessive fertilizing
  9. Recommended fertilizer: 8-3-9 (or similar), with manganese, iron and zinc. Scatter one level tablespoon per foot of tree height (do not apply fertilizer if the tree is flowering or during cold spells of temperature below 60 degrees)
  10. You can spread mulch around the base of the tree, but leave the trunk area uncovered so the tree can breath. Mulch helps to retain humidity

9/6/22 - received second email that order was out for delivery
9/6/22 - received the mango tree. In a nice pot, well packaged, but the tree was super stressed. Lots is brown leaves. Follows instructions provided to help with stress.
9/6/22 - emailed Everglades farm with pictures of the stressed tree.
9/7/22 - Everglades farm responded and instructed to water tree almost every day before noon and Tree should recover
9/15/22 - writing this review and have been following the instructions. The tree lost almost all leaves and not seeing any sign of new growth. Will wait another five days before contacting Everglades again.

Overall excellent response from Everglades and would order again. The tree arrived stressed because it was shipped during the Labor Day weekend and probably sat in a warehouse for an extra day or two.
