Textbook was not in good condition. Spine held together by duct tape. Extremely disappointed and was not worth near what I paid for it but unfortunately too late to return and get another one before school starts.

A pretty decent math book, but I only bought it because my school uses it and I wanted an extra copy to keep at home so I didn't have to lug it back and forth w/ 8,000 other books a day. But it is lightweight, thanks to its lack of unnecessary graphics, and according to my math teachers, it's packed with problems, including extra practice. It has a good amount of examples. It also has a few random biographies of mathematicians and scientists that are interesting, but mostly pointless, and have little correlations to the sections. There are also small sections about math careers. Additionally, there are computer exercises for students with programming experience. Answers to odd problems are in the back, which is a major plus. ~A. Brown

We've only used this a little bit, so far, but it looks to be similar to the first volume, which was excellent. Good, logical progression of concepts, but the best part is that there are plenty of exercises which test the concepts and force the student to show mastery of the concept. Most books we've seen, and also the hw we get at school, only test the student's ability to copy the pattern of problem that was demonstrated in the teaching section. A better test is to include problems which are different enough to require that the student really understood the underlying concept and can then apply it to a slightly different problem. We used this text to supplement whatever was used in the local school.

I love this textbook. I use the book this summer to tutor and prepare my daughter, who will be a 9th grader, for the upcoming new school year. I find the book very easy to read and each lesson is not overloaded with new material. In each exercise section, the first part of it is oral exercise that provides the new math concept practice without involving pencil and paper. There are three levles of difficulty in lesson exercise, A, B, and C. Overall, this is a great book for us. I have a strong math background so I don't need a solution book to go with it but it'll be nice to have it.

A good second year Algebra book to follow the first year Algebra Structure and Method "classic." I love both those books. They have plenty of examples, plenty of exercises levels A, B, C from basic to more challenging. There are just enough colored pictures and supplementary material to keep the book from looking dry and boring, but it isn't so full of extras that ends up with the heft and cost of an encyclopedia.

Relearning algebra as an adult is difficult enough. This book makes it a little easier.
Thorough. As i read through all of the gaps in my understanding from previous, less thorough methods I have tried are becoming crystal clear.
Tons of practice (which makes perfect right?).
Answers to many in the back of the book to check yourself (although I wish a few of these perhaps one from each set had worked out solutions).
Will be supplementing my daughter's education with this book.

Features many, many exercises and problems. The materials in the first third of the book overlaps with Volume 1, but at a higher level of difficulty and in greater depth. Although some of the materials (for example, computer programming exercises and "explorations") are a bit dated, the explanations are very clear and easily understood.

Thank God I have taken Algebra before and know what the subject matter is! The book is very confusing and overly detailed. For example it teaches that a+b=c. then it goes on to teach that b+a=c. Yes, this is true. However, if you are not smart enough to know this, you should not be taking Algebra in the first place. I could put up with this ridiculousness a few times, but it happens so often I feel like a translator when I write notes. This absurdness makes me side with the students who wrote "I hate this book" inside of my used version. I am surprised a school district would even waste it's money on it. Do not waste yours! Furthermore, this book asks the student to use words and facts from geometry. Geometry is fascinating, but it requires knowledge of algebra; therefore, I do not study geometry until I have studied algebra. In this case, I am being asked to apply information I have yet to learn.
