How can I help my child with adding fractions at home?

Using resources such as this to help your children at home with their Maths topics is a brilliant way to boost their confidence, especially if they're struggling with the topic in school and you'd like to offer them some additional support.

For the topic of adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, at KS2 there can be a lot of misconceptions and gaps in knowledge which are important for success in the topic.

It's important to define what's meant by adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators in KS2.

If denominators are like, it can be as simple as adding the numerators together and keeping the denominator as the same shared number.

If the denominators presented in a question or a problem are different to each other, one or both fractions may need converting to an equivalent fraction so that the denominators do match up, then it's simply a case of adding the numerators.

You can watch the video linked below for more help on this.

Why do we need common denominators:

To be able to begin to add or subtract a fraction the denominators must be the same, so the two parts that have been split, when added or subtracted will equal the same size.

When fractions have the same denominator it is simple as the equal parts are the same size. This is why we have to find an equivalent fraction when the denominators aren't the same so we get the same size overall.

This adding and subtracting fractions year 6 worksheet pack will help you students recognise the importance of learning fractions using the fiun and interactive theme

Adding and Subtracting Fractions Worksheets

Here you will find a selection of Fraction worksheets designed to help your child understand how to add and subtract 2 fractions.

The sheets have been split into sections so that you can easily select the right one for your needs.

Within each section the sheets get gradually harder and bring in different skills such as simplifying.

Before your child tackles adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, they should be confident with equivalent fractions.

Using these sheets will help your child to:

  • add and subtract 2 fractions with the same denominator;
  • add and subtract 2 fractions with different denominators;
  • add and subtract improper fractions;
  • apply their understanding of equivalent fractions;
  • simplify fractions;
  • convert an improper fraction to a mixed number.

Can you directly add or subtract fractions with different denominators?

If the denominators are the same, then we can directly add and subtract fractions. But if denominators are different then we need to rationalise the denominators by finding LCM of the two and then add the fractions.

How do you add different fractions with different denominators?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. To add fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator. Then add and simplify.
