2022 ford fusion key fob battery replacement

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and possibly also the revised 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years) Ford Fusion sedan in changing the two batteries in the smart or "intelligent access" key fob remote control for the keyless entry and push button engine start systems.

Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicles such as the Focus, Fiesta, C-Max, Mustang, Escape, Transit Connect, Edge, Flex, Explorer, Expedition, Taurus, F-150, EcoSport, MKC, MKZ, MKS, MKX, MKT and the Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement coin cell (A.K.A. "button" or "watch") battery is part number CR2025.

They are available from various manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony, Duracell, Engergizer and Maxell.

You will need two new CR2025 batteries.

The tools that you may need to access and replace the batteries include a coin and/or a flathead screwdriver.

Update - The owner of a 2013 Ford Fusion informed me that their fob was equipped with just one CR2032 battery.

If your key fob is equipped with a chrome silver release button and a "switchblade" style flip out metal ignition key, it most likely requires just one CR2032 battery.

If your key fob looks like the one shown on this page and does NOT have a swing out metal ignition key, it should require two CR2025 batteries. The newer style of fob shown on this page instead has the backup / emergency metal ignition key located inside the fob under the back cover.

Please check the old battery in your fob before making a purchase.

Make sure that the rear cover is flush against the key fob at every edge.

To test the new key fob battery, stand near your Fusion and press the "Unlock" or "Lock" buttons.

If the new battery is working properly, you should see the parking lights flash and hear the door locks opening or closing.

Be sure to record the battery change in your vehicle's service records.

  • How to open a Ford Fusion key fob

I’ve been trying to replace the battery in my Ford Fusion’s key fob, but I can’t seem to get the fob open so that I can reach the battery. Is there some trick to getting this thing open?

Great question! A lot of people struggle with this particular task, and a lot of them even assume that there isn’t a way to open up the fob. Don’t worry, there is one. Once you know what to do, it’s actually pretty easy! Here’s how to open a Ford Fusion key fob:

  • First, you need to locate the release latch. It’s a plastic button that you need to slide in order to release the back cover. It might be very subtle and be the same color as the rest of the fob. Look very carefully over the surface of the fob until you find the release latch—it should be near the top corner next to the “lock/unlock” button.
  • Once you find the latch, slide it all the way over in order to release the back cover of your fob.
  • Use a key, coin, or flathead screwdriver to pry open the unlocked key fob—make sure to use the notch provided to get leverage.

And that’s it—you’ve successfully opened your Ford Fusion’s key fob! You should now be able to access its battery without any more trouble.
