Beasley Allen is investigating Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan sliding door lock problems. Owners of 2015-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans report that the rear sliding doors’ lock mechanism fails prematurely, frequently during the warranty period. This component failure creates a hazard to occupant safety and we encourage all owners and lessees of these vehicles to check for proper sliding door lock operation.

Once lock failure occurs, the door lock does not respond to key fob, power button command, or manual operation. Failure occurs in the locked or unlocked position, either freezing a door in the closed position or rendering a door unlockable. Prior to complete failure, some owners report hearing a buzzing sound from the door while actuating the door lock.

Many consumers have reported the defect to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For example, an owner of a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan stated,

“[s]liding rear passenger side door does not lock. manual lock is stuck in the open position and does not change position with the inside buttons or the key fobs.”

Similarly, an owner of a 2016 Town & Country stated,

[s]liding doors started buzzing, days later the door was in the locked position and would not open with my children inside after I had returned from the store. I had to roll the window down to get them out. What if that happened during an emergency? Faulty door actuators are a safety hazard. The correct action should be taken to fix this problem before something preventable happens.

Owners and lessees of 2015-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country vans who have experienced rear sliding door failure are invited to contact Clay Barnett or Mitch Williams, lawyers in our Consumer Fraud Section.

I received a letter yesterday from FCA stating that the warranty on the sliding door lock actuators has been extended from 3/36K to 15/150K and says it "applies to certain 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles". Also, on the reverse of the letter is a claim form to get reimbursed for any previous repairs to the lock actuator.

Story:
I had to replace the passenger side lock actuator this past summer because the mechanism was jammed in the "unlocked" position. I just happened to discover it one day when I pulled on the outside handle and the door opened while everything else had stayed locked (I have no idea how long that door had not been locking). I used a cheap Chinese part purchased online from A1 auto parts (I think it was from there, it was the place recommended in a YouTube video) for about $30. That part lasted about 3 weeks before jamming in the "locked" position. After removing the door panel, brute force with a vise grip for leverage on the link rod from the manual lock lever to the mechanism forced the gears to give way and the mechanism to unlock and I got the door to open and do the replacement again, this time using an even cheaper Chinese actuator (2 for ~$38 from Amazon). So far the Amazon part is still working fine. I'm pretty good at replacing the actuator now!

I'm going to put in a claim for the ~$38 and see if FCA will reimburse me for the door lock actuators.

Anybody else get the extended warranty letter from FCA? Anybody else now also an "expert" at replacing the door lock actuators?

You may want to hold off on getting compensation for now in case yours fails again.

After watching a bunch of YouTube videos, about 3.5 hours and a lot of swearing the first time. About 2 hours the second time now that I basically knew what-goes-where. It's not fun doing this repair in the driveway in July in the Florida sun.

It's the same one, whether the doors are powered or not. Only one type sliding door lock actuator listed per rockauto.com
Also shows up in the total assembly for non powered door

I don't think the child lock works either, another safety issue. That's when the door doesn't lock, like the one on my Passenger's side. Never tried that though.
I use a ski tote cable whenever I'm in a location where locking that door is a must. Been around two years, maybe more, since the lock stopped working. I have a replacement but not the incentive to tackle the project, waiting for a day of high motivation. Now Chrysler has saved the day.

I'm in Canada so documentation will be different. It just says to contact the Dealer to have the appropriate repairs performed. It's a warranty extension and they will likely ask for your VIN #.

Not at this time. Go figure. 2015 to 2017 only.

It's an extended warranty for the 2015 to 2017 model years. Just phone the Dealership and give them your vin number, if they ask for it. It appears to apply to all vins for those model years.

I have a 2015 Town&Country and the right side sliding door opens and closes, but the latching sound at the end of closing is like a machine gun.
The dealer says they fix many of these, would cost ARO, $1200.00. Outrageous!

My left side slider is inoperative, both mechanically and electrically and I am quoted $1025.00 to repair.
I am looking into other options.

Chrysler is loosing a buyer over this!

Does anyone know it is only the sliding doors? Both of my 2017 Driver and Passenger Front doors don't open when using the fob. Both sliding door locks are OK.

Why does my car door buzz when I lock it?

In some cars, a door lock actuator becomes noisy and produces a squeaking or buzzing noise when the power door locks are locked or unlocked. If the electric motor or the mechanism inside the door lock actuator wears out, the door lock may lock or unlock slowly or work sometimes but not all the time.

What is a door lock actuator?

The behind-the-scenes mechanism that locks and unlocks your vehicle's doors with the push of a button is the power door-lock actuator. Mounted inside the door, it includes an electric motor, gears and linkage, or a cable that extends or retracts to operate the lock.
