Yellow Handled Dipstick
This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 12th generation (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Ford F-150 truck equipped with the Coyote 5.0 liter V8 engine in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter.

Owners of other Ford vehicles with the Coyote 5.0 liter V8 engine such as the Mustang GT, Falcon GT, and Mustang Boss 302 may also find these DIY oil change instructions to be helpful.

The items needed to complete this procedure include a 15mm socket, a ratcheting wrench, a used oil catch container, a new oil filter, 8 quarts of SAE 5W-20 oil and an automotive funnel.

A few compatible aftermarket oil filters include the following with their part numbers: Motorcraft FL500S, Mobil 1 M1-212, K&N HP-2011, Royal Purple 20-500, ACDelco PF63, Fram PH10575, Purolator PSL22500, Wix 57502, Mobil1 M1-212, Pennzoil HPZ-173, Mann Filter ML 1049 and Hastings LF641.

Used Oil Catch Basin
The first steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the truck on a level surface and shut off the engine.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and allow it to drain out more quickly.

Then engage the emergency parking brake and chock the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Twist off the oil filler cap on the left side of the engine in the counter clockwise direction and lift up the yellow handled oil level dipstick on the right side of the engine. The preceding two steps will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Draining Out Old Oil

Tighten Oil Drain Bolt
Slide underneath the passenger side of the engine and locate the black metal oil drain bolt at the rear edge of the oil pan.

Place the used oil catch basin just below the oil drain bolt.

Loosen the oil drain bolt with a 15mm socket and ratcheting wrench by turning it counter clockwise.

Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt since the old oil may be hot enough to burn your skin depending on how long you warmed up the engine in the first step. For extra safety, wear latex gloves since used motor oil is carcinogenic (cancer causing).

(This generation of the F150 is not equipped with an oil drain bolt washer or "gasket".)

Allow the old oil to drain out for a few minutes, spin in the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction, and tighten it with the 15mm socket and ratcheting wrench to just past hand tight.

Dip Pinky Finger In Oil

Lubricate Rubber O-Ring
Twist off the old oil filter in the counter clockwise direction.

If you have trouble removing the filter, you may need to use an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63250.

Make sure that the rubber o-ring from the old filter is not stuck to the engine.

I recommend buying the Ford OEM Motorcraft FL500Soil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Dip your pinky finger in to some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter. Lubricating the oil filter o-ring will help it form a better seal and make it easier to remove at the next oil change.

Insert Automotive Funnel

Pour In New SAE 5W-20
Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction to about 1/4 to 1/3 turn past hand tight. Do not over tighten the oil filter or use an oil filter wrench to tighten it.

Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole and pour in about 7 quarts of the engine's 8 quart total capacity for an oil change with filter replacement.

(It is far better to have slightly less oil in an engine than too much.)

Replace Oil Filler Cap

Pull Out Oil Level Dipstick
2014 ford f150 5.0 l oil capacity

Check Level On Dipstick
Temporarily replace the oil filler cap and push in the oil level dipstick.

Turn on the engine for a few minutes, shut it off, and allow it to rest for at least 5 to 10 minutes so that the oil drains back to the pan.

Check the oil level on the dipstick and slowly continue adding more oil until the level reaches just at or below the upper hole in the metal.

You may not need to use the entire 8 quarts of new SAE 5W-20 oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.
