2012 chrysler town and country transmission fluid change

The transmission fluid on a Chrysler Town and Country should be changed every 30,000 miles or two years (whichever comes first). If the car is being used to tow, then the frequency increases to every 15,000 miles. The vehicle takes ATF+4 transmission fluid when its changed. Changing the fluid also requires changing the transmission filter, which keeps the fluid clean. Performing this routine maintenance keeps the gears shifting smoothly and can prevent engine damage. This job requires only a couple of tools and about an hour of time.

Step 1

Access the underside of the engine carriage by raising the front of the car up on a pair of jacks. Slide underneath the center of the car and locate the transmission drain pan, which is a large metal box surrounded by bolts. Place a 5-qt. pan underneath the drain pan.

Step 2

Remove the drain bolt on the pipe in front of the drain pan with the 1/2-inch socket wrench. Wait about 10 to 15 minutes for the liquid to stop draining into the pan. Remove all but one bolt from around the drain pan and wait until it stops dripping down. Place a hand on the drain pan to steady it and remove the final bolt. Slowly lower the pan, and tip the remainder of the liquid into the pan. Wash the drain pan and bolt.

Step 3

Remove the filter below the drain pan with the 3/8-inch socket wrench. Replace it with the new filter. Reattach the drain bolt and pan. Lower the car from the jacks.

Step 4

Pop the hood by pulling the hood release lever under the steering column. Locate the transmission dipstick above the drain pan. Pull out the dipstick. Place a funnel in the tube that the dipstick came from. Pour in 4 qts. of ATF+4 transmission fluid. Remove the funnel and replace the dipstick. Close the hood.

Actually, the first question is “Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all?”  For the answer, consult your Chrysler Owner’s Manual. Unless there’s a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change.

But let’s say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance.  The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesn’t just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts.

In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands.
