What We Do in the Shadows spoilers follow.

What We Do in the Shadows season two managed to somehow exceed the first season, wrapping up with a huge cliffhanger in the process.

Based on the movie of the same name, the mockumentary follows vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin Robinson as they – and Nandor's familiar Guillermo – go about their day-to-day life in Staten Island.

"That [mockumentary] style grounds it and makes the show work," said executive producer Stefani Robinson at a virtual PaleyFest panel (via NME). "Staten Island, their neighbours and everything needs to feel real and it's the magic of the show because when it feels real, the cast can be big and surprising. Rooting it in some reality makes it work."

Season three was confirmed by FX, so we know that our favourite vampires will be back. But their lives are likely to be changed forever by the events of the season two finale.

Before we delve into those events, we should warn you that major spoilers are ahead, so look away now if you're not caught up yet.

Here's everything you need to know.

What We Do in the Shadows season 3: How does season 2 finale set it up?

Throughout the season, we saw Guillermo become increasingly more fed up with Nandor's unwillingness to turn him into a vampire, despite the fact Guillermo was saving his life on a regular basis.

Unknown to the vampires, Guillermo had been killing vampire assassins sent to the house and it turned out he was quite good at it, likely due to the fact he's a descendant of Van Helsing.

At the start of the finale, Guillermo had left the Staten Island house for good, but Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja didn't care as they'd been invited to the Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, a prestigious vampire event.

Little did they realise that it was actually a trap set for them by the Vampiric Council who sentenced Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin Robinson to death for killing Baron Afanas in the first season.

Guillermo realised it was a trap and headed to the theatre to save them, resulting in him killing pretty much every vampire there and revealing his vampire-killing skills to Nandor and the others.

The Vampiric Council will likely be out for revenge in the third season. The upcoming episodes will also have to deal with the vampires' reaction to the reveal that Guillermo is a badass vampire hunter.

"Well, he's definitely like, 'Now the cat's out of the bag.' Or, I guess, the bat's out of the bag, for lack of a better word," Harvey Guillén (Guillermo) told Digital Spy. "We're picking up right where we left off, that's for sure.

"But what's to be done with this scenario? What's to be done with someone who has shown their true colours, but also has shown their loyalty, and loyalty to the people who survive?

"We definitely find him at a crossroads. Decisions will be made, and choices are presented."

Series creator Jemaine Clement didn't give any hints as to what to expect in season three, mainly because he won't be involved in the writers' room this time around, so he won't have to deal with the huge cliffhanger.

"I'm leaving them with this big problem to work out," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I think it's a good idea to end on a big cliffhanger, we did the same thing last season. Now they can figure out how to get out of this big mess."

But we have had some hints about what could be coming.

"I will say that the vampires do get hellhounds to protect them," producer Paul Simms said (via ScreenRant). "That's all I'm saying."

Executive producer Stefani Robinson also dropped a key clue for fans: "There are some creatures that live on edifices."

For those who know the show, this is a big reveal: season three will have gargoyles.

And Robinson also said that they have "plans for the show to go into completely different directions" at the virtual PaleyFest panel.

What We Do in the Shadows season 3: Episodes and release date

The new episodes will arrive on FX in the US on Thursday, September 2.

We'd expect it to land on BBC Two in the UK either in November or December.

As for the amount of episodes, both seasons have been ten episodes long, so we can expect season three to stick to the same amount.

What We Do in the Shadows season 3 cast: Who's coming back?

There have been a lot of deaths over the course of the show, but fortunately none of the main characters are affected, so we can expect all of them to return, so that's: Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Matt Berry as Laszlo, Guillén as Guillermo, Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson, and Natasia Demetriou as Nadja.

Chatting to The Guardian about her character, who is the only central woman, Demetriou said: "That's really important to me, that she isn't just a sort of eye-rolling female housemate. I want her to be as opinionated and stupid and wrong and right and thick and disgusting and horny as the men."

Potential returns include Craig Robinson as Claude, the leader of an amateur vampire hunting group, Mark Hamill as Jim the Vampire who still holds a grudge against Laszlo, and Mancunian necromancer Wallace (Benedict Wong).

If the Vampiric Council has a bigger role to play in season three, then we could also see the likes of Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo and Wesley Snipes, who all played members in the first season.

Stefani Robinson also teased a brand new face who is "someone we all know and love" at a virtual PaleyFest panel.

Chatting to Radio Times about how the show manages to attract such exciting guest stars, Demetriou said: "I think probably number one it's probably working with Jemaine and Taika [Waititi]. People are seeing the work they've done over the past decade and loving it, all the stuff they do is so good. So I think that is a big pull, to get people to work with them."

She joked: "Obviously getting to work with me is a huge pull. I know there are a lot of big A-listers out there desperate to get screen-time with me. And who doesn't want to play a vampire? Who doesn't want to come and put fangs on, and a funny mad costume, and pretend to be like a really over-the-top bloodsucking monster for a couple of days? It's like dress-up."

Guillén revealed which actor he'd like to appear on the show (via Comicbook.com): "I would like Sarah Michelle Gellar to stop by and to revisit Buffy. And maybe train Guillermo or give him some pointers. That'd be kind of cool because we've introduced those monster and horror characters from past films and what not so it would be kind of nice to introduce a slayer from the past and to show him the ropes."
