The 3-row SUV segment is truly diverse. It ranges from efficient but practical midsize models to traditional truck-based SUVs and even more modern vehicles that blur boundaries further. Fortunately, that just means there’s a 3-row SUV or crossover to suit just about everyone. Here’s our list of 10 of the best used 3-row SUVs under $20,000.
1. 2015 Toyota Highlander
Safety, comfort, and reliability are the 2015 Toyota Highlander‘s headline traits, followed by seating for up to eight people, an optional hybrid drivetrain, and optional all-wheel drive (AWD) when paired with the non-hybrid V6 engine. The Highlander Hybrid gets a significant boost to its fuel efficiency but isn’t likely to be available below the $20,000 mark. Instead, look for well-equipped XLE, XSE, Limited, or Platinum models. However, you may have to reach into higher-mileage examples to find the more premium trims within our price range. See used 2015 Toyota Highlander models for sale near you
2. 2016 Honda Pilot
The 2016 Honda Pilot‘s handsome looks, standard V6 engine, and seating for up to eight make it an all-arounder the family will love. The Pilot loves the family back with good driver-assist and active safety features, including adaptive cruise control and crash mitigation systems. It’s also easy to drive, comfortable, and, especially in Elite models, well-equipped. See used 2016 Honda Pilot models for sale near you
3. 2019 Kia Sorento
If you need lots of seats, but maybe not so much space, the midsize 2019 Kia Sorento may be a better fit than some of the larger alternatives on this list. Snazzy looks and affordable pricing when new make the Sorento especially attractive at just three years old. The best bargains will come with the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, which gets up to 29 mpg. The 2019 Sorento LX is a significant upgrade from the L. If you can find one within the price limit, the SX Limited includes luxury features like Harman/Kardon audio, wireless phone charging, and more. See used 2019 Kia Sorento models for sale near you
4. 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is the last model year of the 3-row version of this model. (It would eventually be replaced by the Palisade.) The Santa Fe stays true to Hyundai’s focus on value and features. Plenty of impressive safety and premium features come standard in the SE, but you can look for a Limited or a Limited Ultimate if you want to have it all. The 2018 Santa Fe comes standard with a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6, and all-wheel drive is available. See used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe models for sale near you
5. 2018 Mazda CX-9
The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is the 3-row crossover for those who want it all without spending all their money. Despite its affordability, the 2018 CX-9 is one of the best-looking crossovers on the road, and nicely fitted on the inside, too, with near-premium design and materials throughout. Add in Mazda’s unique ability to tune in fun-to-drive traits without compromising ride comfort, and you have a family car that proves you don’t have to give up on fun. You might have to find a higher-mileage 2018 model at this price point, but that will get you more standard safety features than the 2017 model. See used 2018 Mazda CX-9 models for sale near you
6. 2014 Toyota Sequoia
The 2014 Toyota Sequoia is the full-size upgrade from the Highlander, bringing with it Tundra-based traits like a standard 5.7-liter, 381-horsepower V8 engine, up to 7,400 pounds towing capacity, and available 4-wheel drive (4WD). Despite its rugged ability when properly equipped, the Sequoia’s interior can be fairly luxurious, especially in Limited and Platinum trims, with features like second-row captain’s chairs, a 9-inch central display, and Blu-ray rear seat entertainment. 7. 2016 Ford Expedition
While the 3-row crossovers on this list are decidedly suburban in their intended duties, the 2016 Ford Expedition extends beyond the kids’ soccer meets and into the lake, ski, and home improvement zones. Built on a traditional body-on-frame structure like a pickup truck, the 2016 Expedition tows up to 9,200 pounds and packs a 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. For more off-road access, the Expedition is available with true 4-wheel drive (4WD), including a low-range transfer case. See used 2016 Ford Expedition models for sale near you
8. 2014 GMC Yukon
Like the Expedition, the 2014 GMC Yukon is another traditional truck-based SUV, but unlike the Ford, the Yukon is only available with V8 engines — a 5.3-liter 320-horsepower unit or a 6.2-liter 403-horsepower upgrade engine in the luxurious Denali models. You won’t likely find a 2014 Denali below $20,000, but you can find 2012 Denalis for the right price. The 5.3-liter V8 is plenty strong if you don’t need the luxury of the Denali line, however. If you prefer the styling and interior of the Chevrolet Tahoe, you can find a 2014 in the same price range. See used 2014 GMC Yukon models for sale near you
9. 2018 Ford Flex
Wagon, SUV, minivan without sliding doors — whatever you call it, the 2018 Ford Flex has a boxy exterior that contains a spacious, practical interior. The cabin is comfortable and nicely equipped and has one of the more spacious third rows on this list. Power fiends will want to opt for the 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 upgrade engine, but even the base 3.5-liter V6 is good for 287 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available on the base engine and standard with the twin-turbo V6. Don’t expect the Flex to tow like the Expedition or the Yukon. However, when properly equipped, it can pull up to 4,500 pounds. See used 2018 Ford Flex models for sale near you
10. 2017 Dodge Durango
Finally, we have the 2017 Dodge Durango, an SUV that straddles the midsize and traditional full-size segments. With a 293-horsepower V6 engine standard and a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 available, the Durango can tow up to 7,400 pounds despite its midsize footprint. Audiophiles may want to keep an eye out for the available 10-speaker Beats by Dre audio system, while commuters will appreciate the available adaptive cruise control with full stop capability.
