In this anthology, 130 readings address many aspects of social oppression from the perspective of social justice, emphasizing the interconnectedness of social identity and social inequality. After chapters on theoretical and conceptual foundations, readings are grouped in sections on racism, classism, religious oppression, sexism, heterosexism, transgender oppression, ableism, and ageism and adultism. Section introductions give historical background, and within each section, readings are grouped by current data and interpretations, voices of activists and those of the oppressed group, and next steps for ending oppression. A final section considers working for social change. This third edition contains 20 new readings on high-interest topics such as the Occupy movement, immigration, and student debt. Also new is a companion website with videos, activities, examples of action projects, web links to organizations engaged in social action, and lists of print, web, film, and video resources.
