There are two types.

If they have one (or no) tiny screws on each tuner on the back of the headstock, and a nut visible around the tuning post from the front of the headstock, they are 10mm.

If there are two tiny screws per tuner on the back, located diagonally, and no nut surrounding the tuning post just a smooth round bushing, they are 8.2mm.

Either way I would go for 10mm replacements, and widen the holes if needs be. You can do this by hand with a reamer and some patience.

I picked up an old Squire Strat at a thrift shop for crazy cheap. All it needed was cleaning, some knobs, new strings, and 1 broken machine replaced. Since this is a beater for jamming I didn't need a set of "real" tuners. Installation was easy after drilling a couple new screw holes. The old ones actually were under the hardware so they don't show. They are reasonably smooth as expected and don't seem to slip. Mission accomplished!

These are mediocre tuning machines. I purchased them in hopes to avoid filling and redrilling holes in my headstock, but they weren’t a precise fit and were lower quality than the ones I was replacing. Additionally, in order to return them, I was going to have to pay more in shipping than it was really worth to send them back. Not a great experience.

These tuners do not drop into a 1989-90 Squier II Stratocaster. I am sure the tuners work just fine. They appeared to be the same, but are just a tiny bit smaller.

They were rusty old or previously used, also didn’t fit our Fender guitar so we returned them.

Can you put locking tuners on a Strat?

As a guitar player, there's nothing more frustrating than poor tunning stability. Fortunately, for Stratocaster guitars, upgrading tuning performance is as simple as dropping in a set of locking tuners. Luckily, there's an abundant choice of locking tuners specifically for Stratocaster-style guitars.

Is it worth upgrading to locking tuners?

The Verdict: Locking tuners are an excellent choice for any serious player looking for more tuning stability and a more efficient string change than standard or vintage style machine heads offer. They're as practical as they are reliable.

What size are Squier tuners?

Modern style Squier® Telecaster® tuning machines use a 10mm headstock hole. These machines often have one mount screw that is offset in one of several positions. Many times the tuning machines don't have mount screws at all. They all have a nut on the front that you need to unscrew with a 10mm hex wrench.

Do locking tuners help stay in tune?

One of the main reasons why people look to locking tuners, is because they are designed to help your guitar stay in tune longer. So how does this work? Locking tuners clamp the string down when it's wrapped around the peg during restringing. This is really helpful because it strings the string slipping off the peg.
