It appears to be very old. It had no strings or bridge and the neck had come apart from the body. There is a tiny chip on the chin rest which does not affect the use. Inside is an old paper label, signed"Copy of Antonius Stradiuarius( yes that's with a u) Made in Austria" I carried it to my music store and asked them to repair it. I'm including the bill so you can see what has been done. The fiddle is very popular here in Southeast Missouri so I had a new set of Prelude strings put on it and a new bridge which is cut lower for fiddle playing. There is a new fine tuner on the E-string. It has all been cleaned and oiled. Pe gs were set and glued in the neck to hold it securely in place. It doesn't have a country labeled on it or any other words other than a person that repaired it hand wrote his name and address as one who repaired it in the 80's. it comes with a bow with some of the strings coming out. Everything on the violin seems to be in good working order. It came inside a really old coffin case which is in pretty rough shape. I don't know much of anything about violins. Antique Antonius Stradivarius Violin COPY made Czechoslovakia String Instrument This violin has a tag inside that states COPY OF Antonius Stradivarius Czechoslovakia. The case is in tact but is in old worn condition with missing fabric in some areas externally. I have taken detailed pictures of the violin to indicate conditions as I am no expert on this matter. I will note there is some weary of the finish and cracking in various spots. Has 4 strings and a bow that appears to be in good condition. A Sivori MOP Bow and a few extra loose parts(pictured below) I am not an expert on this particular item, I did however take it to an expert and he gave me what info I do have. He said the sound is very good, but one of the keys broke off while be was tuning it. One of the keys is Ebony, one is mahogany. It had been repaired in places over the years. It was dated to the mid 1800's. The case is wood covered with old dry leather, it latches. The Sivori bow is from the 40's and was added later. The violin has a paper label inside that reads"Antonius Stradivarius Cremonenfis Faciebat Anno 17XX" along with a symbol of an A and an S enclosed in a circle. It also has another label from an antique repair that reads"Repaired by John Spencer London 1880" I have included many pictures so you can judge this violin for yourself. It is missing the strings and the bow and has dings and scratches from age and would make a great restoration project. The wood looks like Tiger Maple as the stripes are quite visible. These instruments were imported from Czechoslavaki for stores like Sears Roebuck. Montgomery Ward and others. They were originally intended for sale to'students' Originally varying in cost from $1.50 to $8.00 depending on the amount and quality of workmanship that was done for any given insturment. For instance: A violin with all four interior corner blocks would cost more than one that had just two or none at all. If the underside of the top wood was sanded it would typically produce a better tone and thus that instrument would sell for a higher price. This particular example of the era for sale here on Ebay is on the higher end of such imports and likely sold between the $6-$8 range. It has been sanded appropriately. It's unmarked bow is missing most of it's hairs, otherwise to me it looks in very good condition with no breaks, cracks, or visible damage. The beautiful tiger wood violin itself is sturdy and in amazing condition. There are a couple of the usual small cracks in the wood on the top face. Otherwise, there no breaks or cracks or visible damage Measurements are approximately 23 1/2" in total length. The main body it about 14" long x 8 1/8" widest. The case is in rough condition with broken hinges, but will be great to protect in during shipping. Please see the photos, they describe things ... morebest.
